If you like your Irish Traditional Music fast and frantic, this isn't for you. Josephine Marsh doesn't head into Martin Hayes territory but she does play at a relaxed tempo. There's no doubt the speeds have been chosen with intention, and to bring out the best in her playing. "Lilt" is a bit of a cliche in this context, but it's hard to find a better word. There's a nice lift too, though without going into too much of a backbeat. Accompaniments are light and extremely well done. Listen at a superficial level and there's just a delightful flow to the music. Listen with more attention and there's a stream of tiny subtle variations. They're not noticeable unless you're listening hard, and that's as it should be. There's no doubt from the sound that it's an accordion she's playing but well balanced between the old-fashioned heavy multi-reed sound and an excessively dry "modern" sound. A couple of minuses. I don't think the polkas quite work, maybe a little less subtlety is needed, and I've still not heard anyone really make slow airs work on Anglo concertina! Those are very minor points though as against a lovely piece of work overall.
