Amazon.co.uk Review
Season 1: When the first series of Friends debuted in September 1994, it was immediately obvious there would be no need for the show to find its feet. "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" was a confident introduction to the six lead characters, opening in the middle of an everyday conversation with the soon-to-be uncharacteristic line: "There's nothing to tell". In fact, the soap opera-style plot got complicated pretty quickly, with spoiled brat Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) moving on from her failed wedding to feelings toward nerdy/heartthrob Ross (David Schwimmer). However, no love life was more complicated than Joey's (Matt LeBlanc), with an endless stream of girlfriends that annoyed the hell out of wisecracking roommate Chandler (Matthew Perry), who only seemed to be able to connect with Janice (Maggie Wheeler), the shrillest voice in the city. Bouncing all manner of neuroses around them were Ross' obsessive sister Monica (Courteney Cox) and endearingly ditzy Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Premise established, Series 1 matured the characters by providing a monkey and a son for Ross. We met also meet Ross and Monica's parents Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy (Christina Pickles), Chandler's mother (Morgan Fairchild) and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula (Kudrow, naturally). Fans loved cameos from George Clooney, Jay Leno and show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. But really the focus was on building to "T.O.W. Rachel Finds Out" that Ross is in love with her. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Friends - Series 1 - Episodes 9-16 (1994), 25 Jan 2004
By Christos Stathis "pantelis43" (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The first series of the famous six friends (Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer) go on, with eight more episodes. This is the second dvd of series 1, and features the following episodes:
1) The one where the underdog gets away: Monica plans a lovely, quiet Thanksgiving feast in her apartment for the Friends but her plans go awry and the feast becomes a fiasco!
2) The one with the monkey: Ross arrives at the New Year's Eve party with his new companion, a pet monkey named Marcel, who is more compatible with the group than he is.
3) The one with Mrs. Bing: Chandler's flamboyant romance-novelist mother comes to New York for a visit. Monica and Phoebe cause a traffic accident.
4) The one with the dozen lasagnes: Paolo, Rachel's Italian boyfriend hits on Phoebe in the massage parlour. Phoebe tells Rachel.
5) The one with the boobies: Chandler sees Rachel in the nude and Joey learns that his father is having an affair.
6) The one with the candy hearts: The girls rebel against Valentine's Day by burning mementos from past relationships.
7) The one with the stoned guy: Ross asks Joey for advice on how to talk 'dirty' to women - Monica interviews for a chef's position and the owner of the restaurant is completely high on drugs.
8) The one with the two parts - part 1: Phoebe's twin sister causes confusion and conflict when Joey is attracted to her rather than Joey.
All eight episodes are great, with 'the one with the boobies' standing out. If you wish to complete series 1, check out Episodes 17-24, the last dvd out of 3.
Great selections for your collection, packed with humour and intelligent jokes. Have fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Friends, poor, 6 Jan 2002
By A Customer
The actual Friends episodes are pretty good, with plenty of laughs. However, the disc is poor, with no extra features apart from a four minute film of The Rembrandts performing the Friends theme tune with the Friends dancing about. Quite funny, but unfortunately, thats it as far as extras go. However, there are eight episodes, not four (like the videos), and so this is still worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this series!, 28 April 2000
By A Customer
Like I said in my review of Friends Series 1 Vol 1-8, the first few episodes were much more entertaining, in my opinion.

Here's a rundown of the episodes in this disc: 9. The One Where Underdog Gets Away: A Thanksgiving feats gone awry! 10. The One With The Monkey: Introduces Ross' pet monkey Marcel, who subsequently appears more compatible with the group than he (Ross) is! 11. The One With Mrs. Bing: This is a personal favorite of mine. Showcases the surprise appearance of a very beautiful guest star who plays the role of Chandler's celebrity-novelist mom. 12. The One With The Dozen Lasagnas: Rachel and her Italian beau break up. 13. The One With The Boobies: This is absolutely hilarious! Chandler accidentally sees Rachel naked (and unwittingly starts a wacky chain of "tit for tats") and Joey finds out his father's having an affair with a pet mortician! 14. The One With The Cany Hearts: Involves a ceremonial burning of ex-boyfriend mementos by the three girls. 15. The One With The Stoned Guy: Another surprise guest star, who acts as Monica's stoned potential employer. Also, Ross tries to talk "dirty" to his date. 16. The One With Two Parts: A cliffhanger episode. Joey falls for Phoebe's twin sister (in spite of Phoebe's obvious disapproval).
