Amazon.co.uk Review

Season 1: When the first series of Friends debuted in September 1994, it was immediately obvious there would be no need for the show to find its feet. "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" was a confident introduction to the six lead characters, opening in the middle of an everyday conversation with the soon-to-be uncharacteristic line: "There's nothing to tell". In fact, the soap opera-style plot got complicated pretty quickly, with spoiled brat Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) moving on from her failed wedding to feelings toward nerdy/heartthrob Ross (David Schwimmer). However, no love life was more complicated than Joey's (Matt LeBlanc), with an endless stream of girlfriends that annoyed the hell out of wisecracking roommate Chandler (Matthew Perry), who only seemed to be able to connect with Janice (Maggie Wheeler), the shrillest voice in the city. Bouncing all manner of neuroses around them were Ross' obsessive sister Monica (Courteney Cox) and endearingly ditzy Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Premise established, Series 1 matured the characters by providing a monkey and a son for Ross. We met also meet Ross and Monica's parents Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy (Christina Pickles), Chandler's mother (Morgan Fairchild) and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula (Kudrow, naturally). Fans loved cameos from George Clooney, Jay Leno and show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. But really the focus was on building to "T.O.W. Rachel Finds Out" that Ross is in love with her. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Friends - Series 1 - Episodes 1-8 (1994), 20 Nov 2003
By Christos Stathis "pantelis43" (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
The debut of the six friends (Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer) from New York City, back in 1994, is finally published in a dvd! This very first dvd of series 1, contains the following 8 episodes:
1) The one where it all began (pilot): Rachel dumps Mr. Potato Head at the altar!
2) The one with the sonogram at the end: Ross finds out his estranged lesbian wife and her girlfriend are going to have his baby!
3) The one with the thumb: Phoebe discovers a human thumb floating in her can of soda and gets compensation of $7,000.
4) The one with George Stephanopoulos: The girls (Rachel - Monica - Phoebe) spy on the sexy politician across the street.
5) The one with the east german laundry detergent: Ross and Rachel wash their dirty laundry in public!
6) The one with the butt: Joey finally gets a film role as a stand in for Al Pacino's butt!
7) The one with the blackout: During the power cut, Rachel falls for the owner of the lost kitten, a dark attractive Italian guy. Meanwhile, Chandler is trapped in a cashpoint vestibule with a gorgeous model.
8) The one where Nana dies twice: Ross and Monica go to the bedside of their dead Grandmother who momentarily comes back to life. Chandler questions his sexual identity when a colleague wants to arrange a date for him... with another guy!
Well if you plan to buy, or if you already own this dvd, the 8 very first episodes of the Friends, you shouldn't stop here! Check out also Series 1 - Episodes 9 - 16, or even the whole series 1 box set.
Great selections for your dvd collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning is (almost always) the best!, 16 April 2000
By A Customer
Haven't seen the DVD version of these episodes, but I do have complete sets (Series 1-5 + the first few episodes of Series 6) in VHS and video CD.

What can I say? Although the later episodes are still okay, the first dozen or so were in my opinion better. Acting seems less forced, and the jokes more spontaneous. Also more unexpected but nevertheless amusing cameos (when the main stars' salaries were still probably low enoguh to make this financially feasible!) It's hard to describe; it's best to really see the series in it's entirety (thus far) so that it becomes easier to compare.

The following synopsis mainly culled from the VCD set:

1: THE ONE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN - Rachel dumps Mr. Potato Head At The Altar! 2: THE ONE WITH THE SONOGRAM AT THE END - Ross finds out that his estranged lesbian wife and her girlfriend are going to have his baby! 3: THE ONE WITH THE THUMB - Unbelievably lucky Phoebe discovers a human thumb floating in her softdrink can! 4: THE ONE WITH GEORGE STEPHANOPOULUS - The girls spy on George Stephanopolus across the street from their apartment. 5: THE ONE WITH THE EAST GERMAN LAUNDRY DETERGENT - Rachel enters a new phase in her life when she finally figures out the politics and tribulations involved in washing laundry! 6: THE ONE WITH THE BUTT - Joey gets a film role as a stand for Al Pacino's butt! 7: THE ONE WITH THE BLACKOUT - During a city-wide blackout, Ross decides to finally express his feelings for Rachel but things get in the way! Chandler on the other hand gets stuck in an ATM vestibule with a gorgeous model! 8: THE ONE WHERE NANA DIES TWICE - The Friends attend the funeral of Ross and Monica's dead grandmother. Chandler learns of people's impressions (some initial, some not!) of his sexual identity.

Everyone knows that the 1st season of friends was among the best episodes ever. There is no excuse for not buying this disc. Image quality is top drawer and loads of laughs to boot.
