Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

An epic battle is about to be decided. Gun Hill Road is the setting for the final confrontation between the Infesticons, abstract semantic strategists par excellence, and the jiggafied Majesticons, control freaks chained to the hip-hop dollar. The charge is led by Infesticon #0, Mike Ladd, whose freaky futurism is very much in evidence here. But this time he has an army in tow made up of the likes of Saul Williams, Rob Smith and Anti-Pop's Priest and Beans. Like all great war movies, Gun Hill Road is made up of themes (13 in all) and no songs! Of these, the "Hero Theme" is a triumphant battle hymn with surrealist intent. "Post the testicles by virtual e-mail!" hollers Infesticon #0 to the cheering crowds. "Monkey Theme"'s mod-rocking organ riff is an excuse for Saul Williams to wail dub style about "afrosheen and watermelons". You'll have to listen to record to find out who the ultimate winners are... --Chris Campion

CD Description

GUN HILL ROAD is a concept album in which the Kristal-sipping, bootie-shaking, money-spending "Majesticons" are targeted for annihilation by the free-thinking, no-label-wearing, weed-smoking, manifesto-reading heroes, the "Infesticons". This cultural war takes place on a platform of dissonant, twisted beats courtesy of Infesticon ringleader and Gun Hill Road (a street in the Bronx) resident muse, Mike Ladd.
Ladd,a poet-turned-MC, helped break down the wall between coffeeshop poetry and street corner cipher hip-hop with his albums EASY LISTENING FOR ARMAGEDDON and WELCOME TO THE AFTERFUTURE. His razor-sharp tongue and penetrating powers of observation are just as strong here. Ladd's delivery and space-crafted beats are the highlight on any album he puts out; both are in top form as Ladd tackles materialism, corruption, corporate media and vanity via the Infesticons versus Majesticons skirmishes. Guest MCs and poets, from Liza Jesse Peterson and Saul Williams, to Priest and Beans of Anti-Pop Consortium, round out the avant garde roster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet more superb out put from big dada, 5 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Another mighty fine slice of hip-hop from the Ninja Tune off shot Big Dada, this time from Mike Ladd who, if my memory serves me correctly, spends soem of his spare time working as a humanitys lecturer.

This album contains some of the most outstanding and hunorous rhymeing i have heard in quite some time, combined with some beutifully constructed beats and some down right filthy organ riffs make this a strong contender for beat-tastic album of the year. All this and a story about robots trying to jiggify the world. Marvelous.

If you enjoy this check out some of Mike Ladds over work recorded under his own name, disapointment will be unlikely. How he still has time to teach is beyond me. In case you didn't get it I rather like this album.
