5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful But Dark, 13 Jun 2002
'Memorial Beach' represented the culmination of A-ha's transformation from 80's synth-pop exponents to melancholy 90's rock band. Their metamorphosis can be traced back to the 'Stay On These Roads' album - the last of their mainstream pop outings. Even way back then they gave us an indication of where they were heading with tracks such as 'Out of Blue Comes Green' and 'You'll End Up Crying'. Then came 'East Of The Sun, West of the Moon' with it's deeply moving title track and the broody, unsettling 'Sycamore Leaves'. So now on to 'Memorial Beach' - with hindsight the title itself was an indication that this was to be their last major recording for some time. The opening track 'Dark Is the Night' establishes the tone for the album with its opening line 'It's time we said goodbye'. References to leaving and breaking up are scattered throughout the remaining tracks, most notably in 'Move To Memphis' and the closing track 'Memorial Beach'. However, as with the band's previous work, the air of despondency and hopelessness is lifted by the beauty of the underlying melodies. 'Angel In Snow' is undoubtedly the best track on the album - a simple lyrical composition intertwined with a haunting melody and perfectly delivered through Morten Harket's remarkable vocals. Overall the album is a fine addition to their repertoire and retains that indefinable quality that is unique to A-ha.

5.0 out of 5 stars A-HA 's best album ?, 24 April 2003
By Didier Danillon (Macclesfield) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With a definite originality regarding the lyrics and a sound obviously away from the main road, this album in my opinion marks A-HA's top . Unsurprisingly it is their lowest seller album because of the bands eagerness to create their pop rather than duplicate it from the top of the charts.
Morten 's voice is great as ever, but this time the melodies do serve it right. The music comes in to create a rare blend of rock and pop sounds, that gives the album its unique ambiance.
Almost ten years old, this album is like a precious stone : no trace of age and ever shining.

3.0 out of 5 stars What could have been great is only good, 22 Sep 2005
A-ha adopted a more rock/pop orientated sound with their last album some years earlier, 'Memorial beach' see's this sound progressing but unfortunately, what could have here been some of A-ha's best songs are spoiled by the over-production and over-long versions of songs.
There is a fantastic start with 'Dark is the night' a brooding ballad with soaring vocals (which A-ha always do so well)
'Move to Memphis' was a single to promote the Greatest Hits album and here it is re-worked with a rock sound, but the original synth/dance version was much better.
'Cold as stone' is a good song in the vein of 'I've been losing you'- but way too long - there is a much better version of this song where it is edited down - but only available as a B side!
'Angel in the snow' A simple melodic acoustic guitar ballad.
'Locust' - this is where the over-production on the album starts to show, an average song that has been twiddled with til there is nothing left to get from it.
'Lie down in darkness' This should have been a single as it's the catchiest song on the album.
'How sweet it was' The best song on the album, and classic A-ha with a great melody, unfortunately the production disguises the quality of the song.
'Lamb to the slaughter' An average rock song.
'Between your mama and yourself' I always cringe when I hear this song, I think (or hope) A-ha are trying to be funny with this song, which sounds like a mickey-take of a rock and roll song - with some terrible lyrics - it should have been a b-side(I'm being generous)
'Memorial beach' a good end to the album, a shimmering ballad that takes you in and leaves you wanting more.

What could have been great is only good.
