Mozart's piano sonatas are not as well known as they should be. They are perfect examples of classical form combined with extreme inwardness of emotion. For me, Brendel is the supreme Mozart interpreter, catching all the poetry in this music. The 3 sonatas on this disc are a good introduction to Mozart's middle and late styles. The sound quality is excellent. Is Brendel the ghost of Mozart?

On paper these sonatas look relatively straightforward for a modestly competent pianist such as myself, but great Mozart playing is the highest level of attainment. Lately he's been returning to Mozart. As with his exquisite Haydn Sonata performances, Brendel's approach is deceptively simple but it belies great artistry. These Mozart performances are intimate, classical, spontaneous and deeply satisfying. He employs no pianistic tricks or interpretive quirks, just gives us the music as close to Mozart's scores as possible. I've loved these sonatas for many years and listened to a fair few performances, and I can't but recommend this disc with the greatest enthusiasm.

I am not in any way disappointed with the music or the quality of playing; in fact this is a very pleasant recording to listen to, with one problem ... some of the music has been recorded live (I could find no mention of this in the advertising for it), so Mozart's great music comes with the addition of coughing and other spluttering; not so much appreciated! I will look for another disc with this music on, without the extra noises.
