Amazon.co.uk Review

Despite the most intriguing and possibly off-putting film title of all time, 8 Heads In a Duffel Bag turns out to be an entertaining black comedy that owes more than a little to Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry (1955). Irascible mob goon Tommy (Joe Pesci) is ordered to escort the decapitated heads of eight "scumbags" from East to West coast America. That reliable movie chestnut, the switching of bags at an airport, means they wind up in the unwilling hands of Charlie (Andy Comeau) down in Mexico. Once the mistake is discovered, the humour derives from a succession of failed attempts to dispose of the duffel bag. A tug of war with a dog and an encounter with a blind laundry woman are just the tip of the iceberg. Providing slapstick support to Pesci's straight man is Kristy Swanson as Charlie's flighty fiancée, Dyan Cannon as her recovering alcoholic mother and George Hamilton as a father who can't make a move without calling his mother. Further buffoonery occurs when Pesci interrogates and then teams up with Charlie's roommates. If it all sounds highly unlikely and in bad taste, then you've got the idea exactly. References to GoodFellas early on make it clear that no-one is playing this for anything but macabre laughs.

On the DVD: An anamorphic 16:9 ratio ensures that none of the heads are cut off at the sides; and the picture is backed by a perfectly adequate three-channel Dolby track. The token extras are the theatrical trailer and a five-minute promo. --Paul Tonks

It may have been a low budget movie but if you love very dark comedies then this is the movie for you. Its probably one of the best comedies I have ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars 8 heads are better than two are, 25 Oct 2002

Joe Pesci is a courier carrying 8 heads of crooks to prove that they were dispatched. The Duffel bag that he is carrying is inadvertently exchanged with a bag belonging to a collage student on that is on the way to Mexico. Both parties recognize the mistake, which has hilarious reactionary circumstances.

Some people are good at words. Other people are good at facial expressions. But Dyan Cannon takes the cake when it comes to being hysterical (in more ways than one.) The first time I saw her this was way, was in "Heaven Can Wait" (1978), where she saw a mouse and relives it. Now She is a recovering alcoholic and tries to convince her husband that see saw a head in a dufflbag.

George Hamilton gets to play cool and conservative like the part he played in Doc Hollywood (1991). However one of the highlights of the movie is when he is confronted by the Mexican authorities. Have you seen those Garfield cats that stick in car windows?

There are also lessons on recycling and laundering.

You need to head out and buy this film. After all 8 heads are better than…

4.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the tin, 12 April 2009

This is a zany comedy and as such, shouldn't be taken too seriously. It's the story of a gangster played by Joe Pesci (sending up his previous 'hard man' roles who has to transport the heads of eight hits from the east to the west coast of America. En route his bag gets switched with fellow traveller, medical student Charlie who's travelling to Mexico to meet his girlfriend's parents.

I found it very amusing throughout because of the surreal nature of the plot (the heads keep popping up everywhere!) The highlight for me is when the heads decide to give an impromtu rendition of their version of 'Mr Sandman'. Special credit should be given to Charlie's fellow medical student friends as they really propel the humour along. Overall, a good stupid film for those days you just want to watch a DVD and not think too much.
