Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Comparisons to The Blair Witch Project are inevitable for the inventive, satirical The Last Broadcast, a chilling and funny mockumentary by filmmakers Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler. Besides being made and coming to prominence around the same time (though without a Blair Witch-style marketing juggernaut), The Last Broadcast also details the doomed travails of some amateur filmmakers as they track a mysterious, murderous legend in a dark forest. Hmmm, sound familiar? Actually, The Last Broadcast takes a different tack on this premise, one more media-savvy than Blair Witch. Turns out that this is the latest instalment of the X-Files-ish public access show Fact or Fiction, and its goofy hosts (Avalos and Weiler themselves) plan on doing a live broadcast from deep in the New Jersey woods on their ongoing quest for the Bigfoot-like Jersey Devil. Teaming up with two Internet-based fans, they plunge themselves and their equipment into the wintry woods; only one man, the creepy psychic Jim (Jim Seward), returns, and is promptly convicted of the murders of the other three. While it does boast footage made by the "dead" filmmakers, The Last Broadcast is more formally structured as a documentary, complete with officious, muckraking host (David Leigh) and much behind-the-scenes footage. We are let in on the backgrounds of the victims, the 911 phone calls, the murder trial, the inconsistencies the prosecution overlooked and the painstaking work of reconstructing the film stock, which may unlock the mystery of the true killer. Filmed entirely with digital cameras and assembled on digital systems for a mind-boggling $900, The Last Broadcast boasts a great look and a sharp, satiric eye for sending up the media--Avalos and Weiler are in calm command of their medium and message. The film does take a sharp turn that could either enrage or amaze viewers enraptured by what's preceded, but it's a minor quibble at best. And unlike The Blair Witch Project, The Last Broadcast does answer all the mysterious questions it raises. --Mark Englehart

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to rate and to classify, 3 Sep 2006

Like many people I came to this film based on the revelation that it pre-dated 'The Blair Witch Project', but didn't get any of the hype or praise. There are many similarities with 'TBWP', but also just about as many differences, so comparisons are obvious, but not particularly helpful.

Is it a horror film? A documentary? A comment on the media and how it can distort our picture of reality? Well, it's a little bit of all three. If you're expecting a conventional horror film then you'll probably be disappointed, though it is a creepy film, one that builds up a tense and spooky atmosphere, assuming you're willing to buy into the central premise. If you're not then it's likely to be a long and boring ordeal for you, but that's true of virtually any film. There's also a shocking twist at the end. You might guess what it is, but that's intentional as the film-makers throw clues in throughout the film. I didn't work it out until the end, though, and I think it made the film work more successfully for me. Again, if you're not getting into the film I expect you'll be spending time trying to guess the ending. My advice would be that you let the film wash over you and let the twist come as a surprise. It will shock you and it's one of the most powerful aspects of the film, the one element that makes it really stand above 'The Blair Witch Project'.

The film's comments on the media are rather clever and it's another element that makes it more interesting than 'TBWP', though some might find this element rather unnecessary and think that it makes the film rather slow and ponderous. It does slow the film down a bit and maybe it's a little heavy-handed, but overall I think it's intelligently done.

Although more intelligent than 95% of horror films, it's also far from a perfect viewing experience. But then I'd take an intelligent horror that tries hard over a dumb, traditional Hollywood horror film anyday.

... and this film is truly chilling. 'The Blair Witch Project' has NOTHING on the ending of this film, which completely freaked me out (and which I can't talk about here or it'll kill the film completely). Let's just say that until three quarters of the way through the film I wasn't remotely scared. But that was just build up...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good? Disappointing? Crap? I can't decide..., 13 Jan 2006
I bought this film to make up the £15 on Amazon so I could get free delivery! So, I can't say it's one of those films I was desperate to see, more like "Well I wouldn't mind seeing that one, sounds good & the Jersey Devil really puts the creepers up me, & it's only a fiver".

You can't avoid comparisons with The Blair Witch, simply because both are presented in a similar way (documentary style). I hadn't expected this one to be so much like a documentary, though. I would have liked to have seen more of the four lads in the woods (no, not because I wanna perv at them) but it's mostly interviews, etc. I was so confused at the end, when the "twist" came about, & am still completely baffled as to what was going on (the part where the narrator does that thing? You know what I mean!) I couldn't really be freaked out by Jim as he looks a lot like a Swedish bloke I know!

In all it's a clever little film & there are some creepy parts, namely when two of the lads find the patch of blood & run away. However, I'm one of those people who never gets sick of watching the same films - I can't say I will want to watch this one again.
