5.0 out of 5 stars Small Known Classic, 20 Feb 2001
If I am correct this is the spin off film of the T.V. series of the same name, which I have not seen. The film though is hilarious. Although reviewed as mediocre at best by the press this is simply undeserving. The plot of the film centres around a send up of the Falklands war and the characters involved, which invludes, amongst others, Naval Officers, the Prime Minister and a Russian Spy, expertly played by Alexei Sayle, fronting a nuclear missile silo as a hotel resort. Although partly satirical in content the film is as much a slapstick affair as any, with the Prime Minister (Peter Cook) going insane and cutting unemployment by having employed people jump off the White Cliffs of Dover in order to create more jobs and risking nuclear war with Russia because he is under the belief that Britons will be protected from the nuclear blast by Union Flag motifed umbrellas. Although Cook is superb as the increasingly lunatic man in charge, the S.A.S. officer played by Rik Mayall steals the show in a side splitting end sequence that parodies the Iranian Embassy siege of 1980. Possibly not shown on T.V. too much anymore due to a character that is meant to be the then Princess of Wales in full S&M bondage dress, video is probably the only way to see this home made classic. Well worth it time after time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unemployment is caused by pixies!, 25 Oct 2005

Whoops Apocalypse is a cosistantly funny parody; with some great performances; in particular Peter Cook as Sir Mortimer Chris, the barmy Prime Minister. I found the sequence of him reducing unemployment by getting people to jump off a cliff funny.

Many say that compared to the TV show this is a come down, which I have to agree on. Michael Richards is good, but he can't outdo John Cleese's Lacrobat. It also recycles some jokes from the show; especially with the news reports. But on its own merit, this film is still very funny film. If nothing else its worth watching for the SAS scene, and a great theme song playing over the end credits. Also the chances of the TV series being re-released look very slim, so we may need to make do with this.

3.0 out of 5 stars What about the TV show?, 15 Jun 2006
By J. Mullen "Munster Rugby" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not a bad film at all, particularly Peter Cook's performance. But the TV show was outstanding, with John Cleese in the role of L'Acrobat, David Kelly brilliantly funny as the Shah of Iran's manservant, Alexei Sayle as Commissar Solzhenitzyn ("no relation") and many other brilliant comedians involved. When will the TV show be released to DVD?
