Hovhanness wrote a vast amount of music, not all of it of the highest quality and it was sad to hear of his death recently. However his was a very individual voice and he said things other composers did not. An American with Armenian/Scottish heritage, his music was influenced by the Armenian side and later by the music of countries to the east of there. This CD contains music for harp, alone or with other instruments. If you have had a bad day, put this on and you will soon feel better. The melodic material ranges from mid-European to Far Eastern. Perhaps there is a sameness, with little fast music or dramatic contrast but we all need music of this sort - probably about seven times a week. Hovhanness is well worth exploring - try his 2nd symphony and you will know the meaning of sunlight uplands.
