4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning professional acoustic guitar covers, 19 May 2003
The California Guitar Trio consist of three fantastically gifted acoustic guitarists who not only compose their own music but also cover a variety of styles. In the case of "Rocks the West" from Jazz (caravan) through Mussorgsky and Beethoven through to Pulp Fiction and Queen.

The cd was recorded at a series of small live venues through the West of America which appear to be extremely unlikely for the style of music. To quote from the notes "Henflings", a roadside tavern in the Redwood forest, frequented by persons whose primary souce of transportation is manufactured by Harley Davidson. Another magical evening, despite the fact that sounds from an open kitchen near the stage accompanied the music throughout the performance. Perhaps the first time in history that a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony was accompanied to the sound of grilling hamburgers.

A couple of tracks feature the solo sax playing of Bill Janssen. Apparently he starts the solo secretly at the back of the theatre with a bewlidered audience wondering who is this guy? On on occasion, making his way he through the auidence to the stage an audience member was trying to get past Bill to his seat, Bill turned and pointed his sax at this person's rear end and gave a loud honk - the resulting eruption of laugher and the provking "honk" can be heard on the fourth track.

The masterpiece however is and remains the cover of Queen Bohemian Rhapsody - entirely by acoustic guitar. You listen thinking how are they going to do this or that bit - they do it amazingly!

4.0 out of 5 stars CGT Rocks the west, 13 May 2004
By Dave Walsh (Herne Bay, Kent) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As expected this album is brimming full of virtuoso playing that works really well in the live setting. The recording style is accurate with good separation between the guitars making a really enjoyable listen.

After reading another review, I now understand the sax solo - it may well have worked 'live' but on the recording it spoils a professional set to a great extent - I'd rather not have had the surprise of the sax player walking through the audience - perhaps if the security men had stopped him, the esoteric and frankly tuneless solo could have been left off the album. Fortunately the sax playing is limited to the second half!

Every track is a highlight but to hear the CGT at their finest, try a studio album - its not that they can't play it live, its the additional guests.
