Amazon.co.uk Review
Tell me if you've heard this Urban Legend before: an attractive young woman is driving her car on a dark country road and singing along to the radio. She's running out of gas and so she pulls into a gas station (run by a jittery, stuttering Brad Dourif), but then flees what seems to be an attack, only to find the real threat in her backseat: a hooded killer with an axe who takes her head off with a well-aimed swing. You've heard it before? Not surprising, given that it's one of the more famous urban legends borrowed for Urban Legend, a post-Scream exercise in self-referential horror. The students at an ivy-covered New England college are turning up dead, the victims of a serial killer who murders in the fashion of the "apocryphal" modern myths. It's all for the benefit of good girl with a dark secret Alicia Witt, the sole witness to most of the killings. Doe-eyed Rebecca Gayheart, her gullible best friend, and Jared Leto, the ambitious campus journalist, lead a cast of pretty young women, hunky guys and campus characters--the most notable of which is the suspicious professor Robert Englund, a genre legend in his own right as the star of seven Nightmare on Elm Street films. Take away the cheeky remarks and self-awareness and it's a throwback to the 1970s rash of teen-slasher films, where sexually active teens are sliced, diced and otherwise slaughtered in elaborate and ingenious ways. The increasingly preposterous film is no Scream, but the modestly stylish production has its moments. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a 'horror' film, but still great!, 15 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I've given this film four stars because, whatever your view on it as a 'horror' film is, there's no denying that it is a good film; sure it's a bit dodgy in some parts and certain repeated lines like 'do you need to talk?' can get a bit annoying, one thing that really got on my nerves was the fact that the hooded coat (worn by the killer) seemed to be everywhere, and worn by everyone- even though it is meant to be mid summer! But then again, no film is perfect. The basic plot is fairy easy to tell from the title and the synopsis, but there are some amusing surprises as the film progresses. Pendleton College is the setting, the characters are the typical American gang, Joshua Jackson (Pacey in Dawson's Creek) makes a brief appearance, as do other famous names such as Rebecca Gayheart, Alicia Witt and (I have to say, my favourite) Jared Leto. So there are a few good reasons to watch the film alone. One by one they get killed off, as do the Dean and a few others. In the end out of the main characters only three survive (awww). The murderer, as usual is only uncovered near the end and when he or well be it she is, the performance if highly comical; look out for the 'ding ding ding' part- I defy you not to be falling off the edge of your seat laughing! But to be fair, its pretty easy to work out who it is- I worked it out just from reading the back cover, before even watching the film. As I said before, there will be a few 'lucky coincidences' that may be just a tad too much, for example Professor Wexler's past and how luckily enough, Natalie (the red head daughter in the Cybill TV programme) goes to the library and gets out a book on - yep you've guessed it Urban Legends, and even more luckily enough she goes through the book and explains each Urban Legend, although I have to admit I'm not all that clued up on American U.B's so it was helpful, there are also a few things that you have to question in this film, such as the fact that although Pendleton is a college home to over 3,500 students, then why is it that the only staff there seem to be are the Dean, the Professor, the caretaker, and Reece the ONE safety officer in the whole college and it seems the only type of security the college has! - surely this is unusual for America, isn't it? In relation to this being a 'horror' film, then I wouldn't go that far, its much better categorised as a thriller, sure there are some parts when you think 'Oh God' and the some of the killings are a bit gory, the worst I think has to be the dog in the microwave, but in general there's nothing to make you want to throw-up, there is however the usual 'ketchup' stuff, and the axe. Sorry, I'm not going to go deep into this film and talk about any social comments it ,makes or anything like that, but what I will say is that the film is one you should buy if you want suspense as well as comedy, a great addition to anyone's video collection.
