Amazon.co.uk Review
They're packing enough sheer oomph to blow up your VCR, they're delivering turbocharged roars fit to wake the dead and they're barely restrainable as they rev up on the asphalt--and that's just the presenters. Oh yeah, there's a bunch of cars, too, not to mention some boats and planes and ice-racing and stuff. The BBC's Top Gear is of course the grandmother of all motoring programmes and here the irrepressible Tiff Needell tries out some formidable cars from TVR, BMW, Ferrari, Nissan, Subaru, Porsche, Jaguar, Aston Martin (the latter still oozing panache) and others, while the honorary-lad-of-the-type-we-can-never-resist Vicki Butler-Henderson gets to deliver a monologue on the refurbishment of fighter planes--except she does it from the cockpit in mid-flight in a kind of well-bred shout. The cars are, supposedly, all production models (a "production" F1 McLaren?!), although a production car with a dial on the dashboard which measures acceleration in gravities--yes, a G-force meter!--is probably not coming soon to that dealership near you. The closest the tests get to practicality is the checking of the boot space to see if it'll accommodate a golf bag, which is exactly as it should be in this fun-packed homage to total fantasy motoring. --Roger Thomas
