Responsible for some of Kingsize's best output, DMC beatsmith Steven Hunt returns, after the success of his sophomore LP Different Worlds, to further explore the world of laid-back, instrumental hip-hop beats. A DJ by both name and trade--he cut his teeth as part of the live Dub Pistols set up--Stix uses 2nd Nature as a means of displaying not only his selection of breaks but also his cutting and scratching skills. Check the patterns of "2 Turntables" and "Shit Kickers (part 2)" for examples of his style. Although tapping briefly into the more uptempo, elements of hip-hop with cuts like "Weapons and Rivalry" and "Electric Blues", the overall pace remains slow. With the ultra relaxed Greek meandering of "Mary Jane Fonda" and the gentle piano of "Higher Level" providing evidence of the slower stumbling theme. Although Stix may not deliver his beats with the same invention or panache as DJ Cam, Kushti or Nightmares On Wax, he still manages to hold his own within the crowded and competitive downtempo field. --Found Sounds

2nd Nature is a good chilled melancholic exercise in instrumental hip hop. The beats are chunky and the samples are thoughtfully chosen. Check the opening track, Higher Nature, with its laid back keys, lazy beats and humming sub bass and gentle scratches, it sets the mood for the album. If it could be compared to anything, the nearest thing to this would be DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, not just for the fact that they're both instrumental cut'n'paste albums, but for the wintery mood that both albums carry. Have listen to Angels..., its almost like DJ Stix does Stem/Long Stem, brooding orchestral and moody with nice shifts in tempo.

This is the kinda output that you'd typically associate with Ninja Tune or Mo'Wax, if you like that, you'd be at home with this. Standout tracks are a little hard to pick, each is worthy of a mention, along with those I've already mentioned, 2nd Nature, Electric Blues, 4 Ya Head & Primitive Instincts provide a decent enough representation of the quality of the album. Have a check.

If you like this, of course check the likes of DJ Shadow, if you're looking for something a little more summery, Rjd2 and The Wiseguys first album The Executive Suite are good places to pick up this kinda sound.
