Product Description

Synopsis

This colourful blend of kinky sex, melodrama, and murder features Spanish star Victoria Abril as Rebeca, a news anchorwoman for Madrid television who finds her life turned upside down when her diva movie star mother (Marisa Paredes) comes to visit from abroad for a concert. Poor Rebeca has always been trapped in her mother's shadow, even marrying one of her ex-husbands, Manuel (Feodor Atkine) in a misguided attempt to measure up. When that ex-husband winds up murdered, Rebeca suspects her mother and confesses to the crime on national television in an effort to protect her. She winds up in jail but finds love and support with some tough but tenderhearted women and from a mysterious policeman who thinks she's innocent.

The film features a great musical jail sequence and more than a few other nifty surprises in this twist-laden tale by the celebrated Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. An especially perverse highlight is Rebeca's tryst with a drag queen (Miguel Bosé) impersonating her famous mother. HIGH HEELS also features Javier Bardem, Cristina Marcos, Bibí Andersen, Lupe Barrado, and a typically wonderful score by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almodrama, 10 Mar 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Like all great Almodovar movies, traditional gender roles are subverted in 'High Heels'. In fact for WASP suburbanite America, much of this plot would seem like an episode of Jerry Springer. Mother abandons daughter for singing career, daughter marries mother's former lover, mother continues to have affair with son-in-law while daughter becomes pregnant through a night of passion with a drag queen. How ironic it is then that Almodovar takes much of his influence for this movie from Douglas Sirk. A director noted for his melodramas about late 50's/early 60's family life amongst WASP suburanites in America. In fact this meshing of a traditional film genre with more modern edgy characters has even been given a name - an Almodrama -.

The title 'High Heels' refers to the time when Rebecca was a child and couldn't sleep until she heard the high heels of her mother click-clacking her way home from work outside her bedroom window. Despite being abandoned by her mother, Rebecca never lets go of her love for her and tries all her life to be as 'good' as her in her life and in her loves.

While this movie was critically panned by many critics both in Spain and abroad, 'High Heels' went on to become the then, second highest-grossing film in Spanish history, ('Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown' being the first!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Almodovar at his best, 12 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This film from Almodovar's first years, already shows the dark, complicated and sarcastic side which has made Almodovar so famous. On the other hand, Victoria Abril shines like no one has seen her before. Good film to watch and certainly very entertaining. Who does not love Almodovar?
