Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
What do you get if you fuse the speaker-shredding violence of Alec Empire to the lava-lamp ambience of The Orb? A Shocking Hobby, that's what. Speedy J is the pseudonym of Rotterdam-based psycho-ambient producer Jochem Paap, and he's been making convoluted, intelligent, and ever so slightly unhinged techno since the early 1990s. Hardly the hobby that the title suggests, then--but this is by no means your typical dance music by numbers day job, either. A Shocking Hobby approaches the creation of chill ambience from a similarly brutal perspective as Plastikman or the Aphex Twin. While the Twin's results are strictly hit-or-miss, though, Speedy J clearly understands that there's some merit in crafting a consistent album. The beauty of A Shocking Hobby is in the way that it reconciles its disparate styles--see "Ferber Mudd", where Paap mashes together incandescent walls of ambience with twisted, off-beat techno rhythms, or "Manhasset" where highbrow orchestral sounds slowly segue into a sinister, primordial fuzz.--Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly constructed album, 11 May 2001
By A Customer
This album is one of the best albums ever. It has been approached like an album should be; as a whole. There is the pounding beats that get your body moving, but its the underlying beautiful sounds that keep you happy in your mind. The overall sound of the album is very powerful. The darkness is balanced out well with lighter sounds. 'Drill' does what it says, it drills into your head, building and building. The opening track and the ending track are perfect soundscapes to enter you into the ride, and push you away with a certain sense of emotion. The originality is there. The emotion is there. The power is there. This album has it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Energy Shock, 8 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Long gone is the Speedy J of the catchy Pull Over. These days, Jochem Paap's landscapes are dark, rough and rather inhospitable. A Shocking Hobby is the follow-up to Public Energy No.1, and is in direct line with its predecessor. Sounds are saturated, tortured, twisted to the extreme. Beats agress, disturb, start, stop. The atmosphere is more threatening than ever. But nothing is never completely black or white, and this nightmare collage is more attractive than it appears. The abstraction is such than when the danger seems to fade away for a moment, on Sabina Seats, you would almost take your guard down. But even during the tempered moments, the violence around is palpable. Manhasset, with its piano and more common melody can't manage to reassure fully. The listeners know they are hunted, trapped in some unfamiliar surroundings, and Jochem Paap plays with them like a game master. Very impressive album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get some of the hard stuff, 27 May 2001
By A Customer
A brilliantly executed album. This one just might scare you. Walls of spiralling noise, static fuzz, layered orchestral atmospherics with fired up industrial beats that are clipped to move you and an ongoing momentum with massive cascading peaks...and then there's the haunting lulls and unknown landscapes.

There is so much lame music out there - so give yourself a shock and pick this up. This is noisy stuff from Mr Paap, with tracks like actor nine absolutely firing. Both interesting and shattering. Darkest Massive Attack times 20. Be afraid.
