This is a corker of a film that will grip you from start to finish. I think I've watched it about 3 times and it still has the same impact as the first. A very true (or so I'm led to believe) portrayal of life in East LA during the last few decades. Fantastic character building, where we see the turn from young and innocent to misery, regret and bitterness. The film is 3 hours long, but it could have been 4 as far as I'm concerned. The ending will make you smile, but still feel sad. A fantastic journey. Own it

Overall its a good movie-it's packed full of some fantastic actors that moved on to give some unforgettable performances in later movies unfortunately they only had small parts in this movie; Billy Bob Thornton, Ving Rimes and Danny Trejo (He actually served time in San Quieten).

The biggest let down in this movie is Damian Chapa who is not a strong enough actor to be convincing as 'Miklo' the mixed Chicano/white who is searching for acceptance also the Chemistry between the three brothers is not strong enough for you to believe that they actually care about each other.
And what happened to the soundtrack...for someone that directed 'La Bamba' how could Mr. Hackford leave out a vital element to a film based in the Chicano community?

The Films Scenery is outstanding all through the movie- Particularly the landscape of the 'Burro' (East LA Chicano community) and scenes shot from 'San Quinton' prison are the most believable I've seen to date. Apart from 8 actors all the other guys in San Quinton were real convicts serving time.

The prison plot is great and has some real depth with quirky and interesting characters who are genuinely menacing.

The DVD is a bit light on the special features and only includes a 10min making of 'Blood in Blood out' and a theatrical trailer.

This film is about a family heavily effected by the scourge of gangs and drugs, and follows the male members of the family through the teenage years to later on in life. It has absolutely everything you could want in a film if you like violence and action. It's over 3 hours long but the time flies and you wont want to leave your seat once you start watching this.
