4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Bargain, 23 Dec 2003
By Jamie (Singapore) - See all my reviews
First, the box set includes most of Mozart's masses and you don't need to hunt for any others.
Second, the HIP performance under the direction of Peter Neumann is great. Not heavy like Karajan's or Bohm's full orchestra sound, it has a liturgical effect nevertheless.
Third, the singing is wonderful. I particularly like the sopranos gathered here. Some also appeared under the baton of John Eliot Gardiner. Schlick is superb.
Last, the engineering is satisfactory with its crisp and clear sound recording.
In one word, if you happen to buy the box, you invest rightly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful performances of superb music, 25 Oct 2004

This CD set is bargain-priced and a joy to listen to. I had not previously heard Mozart's masses, and this was certainly the way to do it. He wrote about 19, but you get 12 of them in this set, plus the gorgeous Ave Verum Corpus.

I'm really pleased with this new find.

Highly recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars A good starting point, 13 Mar 2006
This set is cheap, and it is an easy way to collect almost all the masses. If you like church music and Mozart, it is hard to see that you will go wrong by buying this set. On the other side, I am not totally convinced about the music.

The music is good, and the recording is crispy, no doubt about that. But I find everything too soft, especially the requiem. My favourite requiem is Karajan’s recording with the Berliner Philharmonic, which is raw and brutal. The requiem on this box-set reaches Karajan only to his ankles. But if you want a requiem that suites a warm bath, this one is probably better.

I miss a libretto. When they sell you a huge box, they can add a libretto without to much of a hassle. Fortunately, you might have the libretto already (it is not an opera :), or they are readily available on the net.

Conclusion: This set is good, but consider adding a couple of CDs; at least another requiem and maybe “Davidde penitente” to compare it with “Mass in C minor”.
