After reading very good reviews on music magazines, I immediately bought the both volume 1&2 of Scriabin Preludes played by this unknown yet richly gifted pianist, Evgeny Zarafiants. This is certainly one of those Naxos Wonder Recordings. The low price does not reflect the standard of performance! Actually this pianist can match any great masters alive today as far as these recordings are concerned. He plays each piece with stunning delicacy, special insight and solid technical prowess. I've never enjoyed Scriabin's Preludes so much since I listened to Sofronitsky's miracle accounts.

I bought this disc on the basis of the previous reviewers recommendation; after a first listening I bought its companion disc to replace the recording already on my shelf. Zarafiants is a pianist of high calibre. An exemplary musician, he is entirely in sympathy with Scriabin's complex and developing musical language: the early preludes are finely judged, symapthetic to the nineteenth century roots of Scriabin's early style, Chopin, Schumann et al; the latter preludes increasingly explore new territory and demand of the performer an increasingly wide pallet of colour and expression. Zarafiants' pianism is a joy, by turns assertive, delicate, impressionistic, controlled... The preludes by Scriabin's young son (on Volume 2)are a welcome bonus: they sound so Scriabinesque, one might fancifully speculate that the son was a channel for his late father, who had died only shortly before. For under a fiver a piece these are an extraordinary bargain.
