4.0 out of 5 stars a good album by a very fine and gifted artist, 2 May 2001
By A Customer
This Geoffrey Oryema's the 4th album, after Exile, Beat the Border and Night to Night. Over the course of the years, there has been a shift from the more African-style based music of his first album(s) to what many people call a more westernized style modelled on artists like Peter Gabriel.

His latest release belongs to the latter category, though less so than the previous album, Night to Night. He may well have been influenced by Peter Gabriel, but the music is very original and clearly his own. The African influence is detectable throughout the album and gives it a distinct flavour. The lyrics aren't spectacular, but the music flows richly over powerful rhythms, generated by traditional and modern instruments. This is a good album by a very fine and gifted artist, who is worth exploring if you do not know him already.

At the end of the day, it depends on your personal taste which style you prefer. All the albums are worth listening to and have each their own merits. In my view, Beat the Border is a good starting point as it gives you a finely balanced example of both styles.
