Product Description

CD Description

Lou Reed has always dabbled in contrasts, so it comes as nosurprise that the follow-up to his darkly serious concept album BERLIN was a commercially oriented, good-time rock & roll fest. ROCK N' ROLL ANIMAL is a live set that finds Reed stretching out on some of his best-loved Velvet Underground tunes with the help of his crack touring band at the time. Though the songs are somewhat given to stylistic excess, the overall sound is streamlined, accessible, and visceral.
The twin guitar attack of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter help transform Velvet classics like "White Light White Heat", "Sweet Jane", and "Rock 'N' Roll" into pomp/glam-rock [is pomp the word meant here? not pop?] showpieces, complete with extended arrangements, elaborate instrumental sections, and of course, plenty of long guitar solos. Those who cling to the image of Reed as punk godfather might be mystified by his transformation here into Rock God. But the heart of rock & roll beats in the chest of all of Reed's chameleon-like personalities, and ROCK 'N' ROLL ANIMAL amplifies the sound of that heart to great effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slighty better than Frampton comes alive!!!, 28 May 2007
The greatest live album ever bar none. Velvet's snobs hate it because of the "rock outs" and the the extended guitar play of Wagner and Hunter. Look I love the Velvets with Nico and all the early stuff but the this is equally sublime. The band is tighter than a shark with lock jaw and Reed's singing is fantastic. No whooping or howling out of place either. Clearly an audience who love the material and add to the occasion. I dare anyone not to marvel at the brilliance of Sweet Jane as Hunter and Wagner do a jazzy intro to be joined half way through by Lou Reed walking on stage to the crunchiest riff of all time and the audience losing the plot. Heroin is stunning and builds to such a crescendo you feel exhausted at the end of it. The best ever version of Rock n Roll is also included for good measure. All in all Reed doing what Reed does best, surprising the audience and moving the goalposts. Who has ever followed this up? Possibly Television which is the best compliment anyone can pay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a stunning album, 31 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This album is quite simply the best live album ever recorded - with the exception of The Who Live At Leeds. It is not just the superb musicians around Reed that make this such a great album, it is the fact that it captures the mood so perfectly. You can feel the energy generated on that night, and while it may be nearly 30 years since this was recorded, it still sounds as fresh now as it did then. The songs are typical Reed, dark one minute, rocking the next. A master at his craft and in the company of some great musicians. This was my first Reed album, and remains my favourite!

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't make them like this any more!, 18 Jan 2006

(REAL NAME)
This is one of the truly great Lou Reed albums, as well as being a fantastic live album. The guitar playing by Hunter and Wagner is simply a joy to listen to; the lead guitar work in particular is fascinating for the way it synthesises great rock licks with some of the innovations of jazz, particularly the work of John Coltrane. The album displays Reed at his most innovative, re-working Velvets material here to create complete completely new songs; the versions of "Sweet Jane" and "Heroin" are for money, his best recordings of those tracks. Many have desribed this album is simply a classic rock and roll recording, and while it really rocks, unlike so much stuff around both then and today, it it also full of subtlety and intelligence.

Classic Rou Reed with the amazing lyrical backdrop of Hunter & Wagner's ethereal guitars. Excellent renditions of all songs, esp knock-out version of Sweet Jane. Awesome
