Amazon.co.uk Review

Film-makers often remark that it's just so hard to make a bad picture that few would take on the challenge if they weren't so naive. Steve Martin's Bobby Bowfinger is cut from that pattern, one of those sweet, indomitable operators of Hollywood who seem to be descended directly from Ed Wood (of Plan 9 from Outer Space infamy). To resurrect his ramshackle existence, Bowfinger opts to film his accountant's sci-fi spectacular,Chubby Rain, about aliens invading in raindrops. The snag is he needs to attach action megastar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), an actor so paranoid he counts the occurrences of the letter "k" in scripts to uncover possible Ku Klux Klan influences. When his effort fails, Bowfinger hits on an ingenious scheme to film Ramsey without his knowledge, throwing his actors at the hapless star whenever he appears in public. Only Kit begins to believe he's being hounded by aliens for real, and runs hysterically to his guru (Terence Stamp) at a Scientology-clone group called MindHead, where people walk around in fine suits wearing white pyramids on their heads. Deprived of his star, yet not to be undone, Bowfinger hires a look-alike, Jiff (also Eddie Murphy), to fill in. The tone of the picture is sometimes flat, rather than deadpan, but that's nitpicking. The farce is quick and engrossing, and populated with terrific performances, especially by Eddie Murphy, whose dual role as Kit and Jiff showcases his character-building gift, and by Martin, whose Bowfinger, part con man and part would-be visionary, manages to capture your sympathies. Heather Graham's would-be actress cheerfully sleeps her way to the top like she knows she's supposed to, and Christine Baranski plays her shopworn method actor with myopic self-absorption. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, high-concept comedy: buy it!, 18 Aug 2007
By Brian Levine - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The cast does justice to the brilliantly simple concept of a bunch of loser Hollywood misfits led by arch-producer Bowfinger (Martin) who want to make a film so badly that they film their 'lead', the A-list Kit Murphy (played by Eddie Murphy) without him knowing it.

Murphy does a typically brilliant performance as the neurotic Kit and his nerdy, braces-wearing brother. Martin, writer and lead, is superb. As another reviewer has said, this is his last great film (others would include 'The Jerk').

Heather Graham is delectable as always and plays the actress sleeping her way to the top. Christine Baranski brings her own blend of camp madness to the whole process.

The script is superb, the timing excellent.

This is a truly great comedy film. Buy it: you will not be disappointed!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, 8 April 2003
By A Customer
Not all of Eddie Murphy's post Beverly Hills Cop movies have been much to write home about, but this movie is a definate exception.

Much to my partner's dismay, I found myself laughing uncontrolably whilst on a flight to Portugal, disturbing other passengers - at the slightly un-PC misuse of the enthsiasm and naivety of the lead character's twin brother - in the making of the budget movie which is central to this story.

Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Heather Graham (and in fact all the actors in the key roles) play their parts to perfection in this movie. Look out for highlights such as filming on the freeway, red stiletto's in the car park and starlet bed hopping.

This is one you can watch again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah - Steve Martin is funny again!, 31 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I'd almost given up hope. Steve Martin - the comic genius who gave us The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Roxanne, All of Me, LA Story and of course The Man With Two Brains suddenly lost it with Father of the Bride.

Well Bowfinger sees a true return to form doing what he does best - simple, silly comedy. Add to this Murphy's smart self-mocking role as the unwitting star of Martin's film and the laughs come thick and fast.

As usual, it's the dog that steals the show with Betsy following in the footsteps (literally, if you watch the film!) of S*ithead in The Jerk.

DVD extras are slightly disappointing - not much added here - but Steve, it's good to have you back!
