Amazon.co.uk Review

Anthony Hopkins is a brilliant actor; Cuba Gooding Jr is a talented guy with a lot of charm. Both have recently won Oscars (Best Actor for The Silence of the Lambs and Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire, respectively); neither can make Instinct compelling. Hopkins plays a brilliant anthropologist studying gorillas who entered into their world, becoming part of their family, and who killed two park rangers in the gorillas' habitat. Gooding plays a brilliant young psychiatrist who is supposed to evaluate Hopkins and determine whether he's fit to stand trial. Hopkins, along with a number of other psychotics, is being held at a prison, which serves to illustrate the movie's themes about control and freedom. It's not so much that the ideas themselves are hokum--nature versus civilisation is always a rich topic--it's that Instinct boils them down to inane sound bites. Psychology is reduced to a game in which the psychiatrist's job is to trick the patient into believing the correct thing or revealing the key that will solve the puzzle. There's not a credible moment in the whole movie, despite the presence of a good cast, including Donald Sutherland and Maura Tierney. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see, 4 Jan 2004
By A Customer
WOW, what a film. The film critic who first writes a review on this must be very shallow and did not get the message of this film.
A wonderful film that I beleive everyone should watch.
When all things have been used from this earth, ie, every animal killed, every tree destroyed, every fish caught, every water drained, then perhaps we will realise that we do NOT own the earth and that we cannot survive on power and money alone.

This film still plays on my mind and I feel that it is a good lesson to learn from watching this.
We as humans are nothing, nature is everything. We are destoyers and takers...very sad....

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, 24 Dec 2003
I just read a review of this film by one of the Amazon team, and obviously he doesn't understand many things. This is one of the most amazing films I have ever come across. Every moment of the film IS creditable, not just creditable; brilliant. Even if you completely disagree with what the movie is saying it is still a must-see. Ignore anyone who thinks this is rubbish; I give this film my 110% confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful, thought provoking, extremely enjoyable film!, 1 Aug 2000
I didn't know much about this film before I watched it and had little expectations of it, I thought it would be an average film, fortunatley I was wrong. Anthony Hopkins plays his character with the brilliant acting ability that you would expect, the same goes for Oscar winning Cuba Gooding Jr. The story is about a doctor that has been classed as insane as he has been committed of murder and refuses to communicate with the world around him. Gooding plays the doctor who is trying to understand what makes his mind work and what makes him act the way he does. The film makes you wonder what people are actually insane. Are they insane or just people who want to be free from the world that has been created around them, the world that controls how they behave and how they carry out their daily lives.(if you dont understand what I'm talking about you will after you have watch the film.) I strongly recommend this film to everyone as it is highly enjoyable and it will be money well spend if you buy this film.
