Amazon.co.uk Review
Whenever Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra came to London in the 1950s and 1960s, the queue for tickets on the first day of booking would coil round the Royal Festival Hall not once but twice. Listening to this CD version of a famous 1967 Polydor recording of the great man at work, one can understand the attraction. The disc includes three Russian works; Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade with Michel Schwalbe's solo violin playing like a hypnotist's fob-watch; Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Italien with stunning brasses; and the 1812 Overture where even the terrifying cannons sound musical. The very disc itself seems to have a sense of occasion. Karajan makes what is very much a performance recorded rather than a recording performed. It is as if Sheherzade herself were wielding the baton and spellbinding the Sultan night after night. No orchestra and conductor weave this sort of magic today. Only the hasty marketing lets the side down as it cannot even be bothered to unify the spelling on the sleeve. Which is it to be, DG? Sche or She? --Rick Jones

2.0 out of 5 stars BPO in a bad-mood!, 8 Jul 2008
By Ryan Kernaghan "In the Depths" (New South Wales, Australia) - See all my reviews
One will instantly be attracted to this enticing presentation of Karajan's only recording (1967) of the musical collage Scheherazade, one of RK's most spectacular and sensuous works. It also includes one of his Capriccio Italien interpretations, which is a showcase of the virtuosity the Berlin strings under Karajan.

However, the album is flawed in many respects. Karajan and the BPO are always convincing, but I feel quite dissatisfied with this piece. I have often quipped that it feels like the orchestra, recording producers and conductor alike were in a bad mood and didn't put the last touches of refinement that usually characterise Karajan's repertoire. On recording, there are audible bumps and the sounds of orchestra movement are intolerable at times. Hiss is present too. If you are after a clean, crisp attack to a very exotic piece, look elsewhere.

Generally, this is a poor substitute for other strong contenders like the Mehta collaboration with the LA Philharmonic. There, the soloist is not as convincing as Michel Schwalbe, perhaps the main gem of the present recording. But Mehta's orchestra stamps the firm passages out much more violently and suavely simultaneously. Here, there are clumsy moments and the work in general comes off rather strained and abrasive. Not one of Karajan's finer achievements.

Nor is the 1812 Overture. It is very poorly `supported' by the Don Kosaken Chor who produce none of the enchanting and soft tones typical of other conductor's approaches to this work (especially that of Jarvi, but also Domingo's account). The bells at the grand conclusion also sound more like cymbals or some electronic substitute rather than a glorious, boisterous tone of a church bell, for example. Nor is the cannon convincing, sounding more like a timpani. Rather artificial and lacking substance in general.

Overall, you would be advised to buy this if for Michel Schwalbe's violin solo in the Scheherazade alone. It is intensely beautiful and the "gem in the rough" of this recording. Otherwise, there are more convincing alternatives on the market, particularly the Mehta collaboration. RK's own Capriccio Espagnol is perhaps a more sensible coupling in that set too.
