This set has been consistently well reviewed since it was reissued on DG Masters. In terms of playing and interpretation, it is certainly up there with the best of them. Schneiderhahn's playing is clean and controlled, and he produces a beautiful sound. Kempff was a great artiste and here there are both poetry and power. But there is a snag. The recording is over 50 years old, and while Schneiderhan sounds natural and sonorous, the piano, rather backwardly balanced, is less well focused ; it sounds 'old'. For that reason I would stop short of 5 stars, though the interpretations deserve it. It is well worth hearing Schneiderhahn's more recent set with Carl Seeman, available on DG Trio and wonderful value at under £10 (at the time of writing). Here the balance is better, the piano is clearer and fuller, and Seeman is good ; and these performances have greater vigour than the older ones, good as they are. But the Schneiderhan/Kempff set gives great pleasure, despite the drawback.
