Amazon.co.uk Review
An international co-production of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Australia's Channel 9 and Hallmark Entertainment, Farscape is genre television at its most ambitious, inspired both by the cult appeal of Babylon 5 and the continuing success of the Star Trek franchise. Making extensive use of CGI, prosthetics and state-of-the-art puppetry, Farscape takes a visual leap beyond previous shows. Admittedly, the basic premise may be borrowed from Buck Rogers (American astronaut catapulted to far-flung galaxy populated by strange aliens), while the crew have something of Blake's 7 about them (a motley bunch of escaped convicts pursued by a relentless foe), and ideas like the living ship are borrowed from Babylon 5, but the Farscape concept has a freshness that makes it look and feel completely original. The production design is all bio-mechanical curves and the script never takes itself too seriously (fart jokes and double-entendres pop up when you least expect them). It must have been expensive to make, but it certainly looks (and sounds--in Dolby Digital 5.1) like every penny made it to the screen.

In this handsome box set, two discs contain the first four episodes of the first season, completely uncut. In "Premiere", astronaut John Crichton is inadvertently catapulted into a parallel universe where he is taken on board the bio-mechanical ship Moya and meets the inhabitants: D'Argo, a seven-foot-tall Luxan warrior, Zhaan, a blue-skinned Delvian priestess, and the diminutive slug-like Rygel, the Henson Creature Shop's proudest creation. Another humanoid (and potential love interest), formidable-yet-sexy Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun, joins soon after. In true Buck Rogers style, Ben Browder plays Crichton as an all-American astronaut, although with a more believable sense of bewilderment; the supporting cast is a mixture of Australian and British actors, mostly disguised under heavy make-up. In episode 2, "Throne for a Loss", Rygel's devious side is developed further as he gets the crew into trouble when he "borrows" a crystal crucial to the operation of the ship and is kidnapped by some unpleasant characters. Disc Two opens with the wittily titled "Back and Back and Back to the Future", the obligatory time-travel episode, followed by "I, E.T.", in which Crichton feels the force of his earlier comment: "Boy did Spielberg get it wrong. Close Encounters, my ass."

On the DVD: Disc One includes a "making of" documentary, with comments from the cast, Brian Henson and producer Rockne S. O'Bannon (the man also responsible for Alien Nation and SeaQuest), plus a profile of principal character John Crichton. Disc Two profiles Aeryn Sun and has the original trailer and DVD-ROM extras (screensaver and weblinks). --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars The true 'Next Generation' in sci-fi, 30 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Ok, I freely admit that I'm only a recent convert (just catching the tail-end of S2 on the beeb) but after acquiring the first 3 DVD sets for Xmas (and saving like frell for the rest), I can see why this show is already being called a cult classic. I was never into B5 (like most 'Scapers') but the vital ingredients that made that show so vital in moving the genre forward are here, plus a frell load more! The superb mesh of fabulous scripts, mind-boggling effects and unpretentious characters (Trek take note!) both fully developed and stunningly portrayed by all involved, WILL keep you coming back, if only to see if they can retain such quality standards each week. Even the superb puppetry will have you engrossed! This is what 21st Century television SHOULD be all about, hell I'd even go so far as to say that the attention to detail put into it blows away ANYTHING currently being produced elsewhere on television & even film! You may forget you're even watching a TV show, it has a true cinematic air about it. A few series down and this will surely be regarded as a show that dared to breathe fresh life into the genre that, despite it's growing audience, still doesn't get the respect it deserves. Whilst Star Trek wallows in it's mediocrity and endlessly shallow spin-offs the competition is turning the whole thing on it's head. My suggestion is to buy ALL the DVDs in one and burn everything else in preparation for the true marvel that is Farscape!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning DVD for a stunning show, 2 April 2000
By A Customer
Farscape is THE hot Sci-Fi show for me.I'm a huge Babylon 5 fan and with the end of B5 I was trying to make do with the various Star Trek shows that are very polished but don't "hit the spot" for me. The DVD has been thoughtfully produced with a few nice extra's but the big thing is the quality, both audio and video are exceptional.Hearing the original Dolby Digital 5.1 sound track is a revelation,it's very dynamic and coherent.Video quality is superb with eye popping colour and no artifacts visible.Keep case and slip cases have nice art work for an exceptional set.Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, emotional, occasionally hilarous - it's a blast!, 26 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Very very rarely does a series or film grab my attention, and make me demand more, like Farscape has. I happened across it entirely accidentally, mid series, whilst staying in a seedy hotel in Oxford - kudos to the BBC for picking this one up - and was instantly hooked.

Farscape is so entirely *different* to any other Science Fiction/Science Fantasy show (or film, for that matter) that it's a breath of fresh air. Somehow, it moves seamlessly between outrageous humour to emotionally breathtaking to near slapstick to quasi-scientific to derring-do and back again; often in the space of a few minutes. Sitting down and watching an entire season in as few sittings as possible, it's a joy to watch the lead characters slowly bond together. No instant-friendships here, and the more realistic for it, I think.

Farscape breaks the relentless monotony which will be Star Trek TNG/DS9/Voyager's legacy. On Farscape, there are few last-second saves, and no technobabble ("remodulate the shield harmonics and fire a tachyon pulse", pur-lease!). There's no flat, monochromatic characters here, they're all flawed (villan and hero alike), which has given the writers a fantastic opportunity to allow them to grow, become more three-dimensional - to become *real people* - something they (the writers) have taken up with a heartwarming enthusiasm. They're not out to save the Universe or make it a better place, they're not afraid to fight (well, they are, but that's all part of the fun); they're out to stay alive - a full time occupation, it seems!

It would be wrong to say that Farscape is perfect; but rarely do they drop the ball. There are occasional episodes in the series which are somewhat forgettable; but mostly, they are brilliance unleashed.

If you only ever buy one DVD - buy this one; because if you think you enjoy (or even slightly like) Star Trek or Lexx, I can all but guarantee that you'll be ordering the next Farscape DVD, and the next, and the next.

Truly compelling: 5 stars just doesn't do Farscape justice.
