Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

An international co-production of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Australia's Channel 9 and Hallmark Entertainment, Farscape is genre television at its most ambitious, inspired both by the cult appeal of Babylon 5 and the continuing success of the Star Trek franchise. Making extensive use of CGI, prosthetics and state-of-the-art puppetry, Farscape takes a visual leap beyond previous shows. Admittedly, the basic premise may be borrowed from Buck Rogers (American astronaut catapulted to far-flung galaxy populated by strange aliens), while the crew have something of Blake's 7 about them (a motley bunch of escaped convicts pursued by a relentless foe), and ideas like the living ship are borrowed from Babylon 5, but the Farscape concept has a freshness that makes it look and feel completely original. The production design is all bio-mechanical curves and the script never takes itself too seriously (fart jokes and double-entendres pop up when you least expect them). It must have been expensive to make, but it certainly looks (and sounds) like every penny made it to the screen. In true Buck Rogers style, Ben Browder plays leading man John Crichton as an all-American astronaut, although with a more believable sense of bewilderment; the supporting cast is a mixture of Australian and British actors, mostly disguised under heavy make-up.

This tape contains the first two episodes. In "Premiere", astronaut John Crichton is inadvertently catapulted into a parallel universe where he is taken on board the bio-mechanical ship Moya and meets the inhabitants: D'Argo, a seven-foot-tall Luxan warrior, Zhaan, a blue-skinned Delvian priestess, and the diminutive slug-like Rygel, the Henson Creature Shop's proudest creation. Another humanoid (and potential love interest), formidable-yet-sexy Peacekeepr Aeryn Sun, joins soon after. In episode 2, "Throne for a Loss", Rygel's devious side is developed further as he gets the crew into trouble when he "borrows" a crystal crucial to the operation of the ship and is kidnapped by some unpleasant characters. --Mark Walker

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as what's to come., 3 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Now don't get me wrong. I love Farscape and every episode but I've only given this video 3 stars. Why? Because this is no where near as good as what is to come. "Premiere" is in some places very awkward and in some places it just seems silly but overall its a good episode which introduces all of the major players well including, Crais a character who will appear time and time again. Meanwhile, "Throne For a Loss" is an improvement with further developing character relationships and a good, action-packed plot. The reason I've only given the video 3 stars is because it is nowhere near as good as Season Two. Watch out for those vids when they come, but buy this one first. Its still worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars The freshest sci-fi series around, 9 April 2000
Take Buck Rogers, Star Trek, Blake's Seven and The muppets and you get Farscape. This is the best series around for ages, its dramatic, fresh , funny and it shows ST:Voyager exactley how it should be done! From its ingrdients this should stink big time, but it doesn't. For once we get genuinley interesting aliens, Henson's constructs are light years ahead of the usual bumpy forehead variety and the spaceship designs look great. Definately a series to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most compelling and addictive scifi to emerge in years., 4 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Farscape is possibly the best new SciFi to emerge in years. Truly addictive characters, great stories and a totally well thought-out and imaginative plot, good cgi and effects, tragely compelling muppeteering -- Farscape has emerged as one of the gems of 1999 and 2000. I have been watching this on BBC and think everyone should give this a try.
