5.0 out of 5 stars The best re-telling of the Robin Hood legend ever, 8 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I first saw this as a kid on TV in the early 80's and it definitely stands the test of time. The outlaws are all young and ragged as they would have been (not a pair of lincoln green tights in sight!) and their characters avoid many of the cliches found in other adaptions and are believable. The locations are also beautiful and realistic (lots of mud!). The adding of magic and a forest god sets it apart from all the other versions but it still has loads of action and romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I remebered., 6 Sep 2002

I used to watch this particular video a long time ago, and seeing it on Amazon, I couldn't resist buying it again for old time's sake. The atmosphere is uniqe, possibly due to the optical effects of the early 80s BBC cameras in Epping Forest, (I believe that was the location). It seems all of the cliches that haunt Robin Hood interpretations in any format, (screen, stage, or literature), are not present; instead, meaningful original approaches are made. Really, the originality is what sets this series, (at least these few episodes I know), apart.
I would say that there are no characters or loopholes in the story that detract from the overall quality of the show. As I said, this is much better than I remeber it being.

3.0 out of 5 stars The hooded Man, 26 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Hang on a minute, I was brought up on Robin Hood either being dressed in bright green tights or having an American twang bigger than the one he fires arrows with. This Robin Hood is more like the real thing and I wouldn't call some of the men 'merry.' This is the way television should be made. It it everything films of Sherwood often aren't and gives the whole tale a more sinister and gritty feel to it, aided and abetted by the celtic tunes of Clannad. The only downside to this particular presentation is that being the early episodes, you can't help but feel that the whole cast and crew are getting used to the feel of this groundbreaking project. Well worth watching, but not a patch on later episodes.
