Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Going My Way is an irresistible Oscar winner from writer-director Leo McCarey (An Affair to Remember) that stars Bing Crosby as a low-key, crooning priest who joins the parish of a no-nonsense but sweet old Irish man of the cloth (Barry Fitzgerald). While Bing turns local toughs into a choir, the elder priest worries over the church building fund and whether he'll get a chance to see his old mother back in Ireland before she dies. One would have to have a heart of stone not to be won over by this charmer, with a lovely ending guaranteed to make you bawl for a week. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Synopsis

A church gets a new priest in the form of Father O'Malley. The old priest is not too impressed with his ideas, but discovers that the neighbourhood's interest in the church has been rekindled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a wonderful film..., 20 Jan 2003

This film is truly wonderful to watch. Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald play wonderfully off each other throughout the film. It is easy to see why each came away with an Oscar from the film. It is a film that is much maligned, but for anyone who enjoys a film with a good story, top notch performances and the absolute pleasure of Barry Fitzgerald then buy this film and simply enjoy a film from an age gone by!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas sentiment, 14 Nov 2000
This film is one of the classics of cinema and film making. Barry Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby give wonderful performances in this wonderful Christmas tear-jerker. Words cannot justify it - you just have to see it for yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its alright, 11 Mar 2009
By Alex da Silva (Lytham St. Annes, UK) - See all my reviews
The film goes on a little too long, but then what do you expect from an Oscar-winning film! Barry Fitzgerald is very good as the elderly priest and Bing Crosby breezes through the film in his relaxed manner. The songs aren't that good and having children singing solos in "Swinging From A Star" ruins the song with schmaltz. In the film, the title song is rejected by publishers (quite rightly) as being too schmaltzy. It is performed twice, once by Bing and another by the opera singer Rise Stevens with a ridiculously sincere operatic version with the children backing her. Pure drivel.........actually painful to hear. Its a heart-warming tale so it won an oscar, but there are far better films that were made in 1944......I could name about 30.
