While Be Big is one of L and H's best, it is the shorter Laughing Gravy that is probably their masterwork. Here we have the gentle, but irascible Hardy at his comic best, while the dizzy Laurel manages to cook up enough trouble for Hardy to fill a plot twice its length. The two-reeler is the classic version, having the more satisfactory and hilarious ending; the extra reel provides more classic comedy, but adds nothing to storyline that we cannot see in other L&H movies. Unmissable --- and who, but Laurel and Hardy, would name a dog Laughing Gravy? Best of the best and meriting at least 5 stars.

Let's face it - if you're not a fan (and alot of my friends arn't) then this won't do it for you. But for the rest, and i know there are alot of us, this is a very worthwhile disc, with the French and Spanish versions particularly interesting even if you don't speak the languages - Watching Stan and Ollie attempt to pronounce the words is a different sort of comedy! However, this isn't to detract from these genius's (geniei?). Be Big is a typical 'getting in trouble with the wives' due to wanting a good time (watch for the excellent doorbell gags) and Laughing Gravy has some wonderful visual gags showing the pair's silent-era beginnings. The disc is as clear as i've seen, considering the age of the print. Once again - if you're a fan - get this.

Be Big is one of Laurel & Hardy's weakest shorts, with a flimsy plot clearly failing to provide any comic inspiration and relies too heavily on the sight of Ollie shouting at Stan. However, Laughing Gravy is a classic that merits the attention whatever your opinions may be on colourisation. This version includes an extra 10 minutes of footage never before seen, with Stan almost inheriting a large fortune. With that cute dog of the title always gaining audience sympathy, this is a truly wonderful and often hysterically funny 30 minutes that's worth sitting through Be Big for. A must-see.
