Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Cary Grant is the befuddled English Earl in The Grass is Greener, casually puttering around his tourist attraction of a grand old English estate in casual dress while a bull of an American millionaire (Robert Mitchum) crashes into his life and seduces Grant's sophisticated lady (Deborah Kerr). It's pure fantasy, of course, with its cool, cultured lovers swapping witty banter with the same calm they swap gunshots in an old-fashioned duel. Has adultery and jealousy ever been so civilised? Stanley Donen never shakes this very British drawing room comedy of manners free of its talky, stage-bound source or its deliberate snail's pace, but he does manages to bring a lightness that softens the wit with an American lilt. Ultimately, though, it's all about a crack cast in fine form: Mitchum's sleepy-eyed insolence, Kerr's easy elegance, Jean Simmons' flighty outrageousness, and especially the charm and measured grace that is Cary Grant. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

Synopsis

4.0 out of 5 stars Infidelity at its best, 8 Oct 2001
By swadham@lineone.net (Tichborne, Hampshire) - See all my reviews
Cool Cary (his Lordship)copes with dubious Deborah and her crush on an American interloper, Robert Mitchum. The unforgetable Richard Wattis plays a superb butler whilst Jean Simmons is the flighty, dressy accessory who is desperate for the attention of his Lordship. The plot takes a little bit of convincing at certain points but nevertheless this is Cary at his best with excellent script, wit and timing and first class support actors including Deborah Kerr who must be the finest English lady!. A most enjoyable film and light entertainment at its best. Who can perform that better than Cary Grant?

4.0 out of 5 stars Infidelity was never this fun, 18 May 2000

Deberah Kerr is "happily" married to Cary Grant, or at least she thought she was until Robert Micham walked into her drawing room. Throw is society belle Jean Simmonds to comfort the cuckold and the fur really starts to fly! A witty and intelligently handled plot, exquisite acting and some side splitting one liners make this an excellent movie to cheer up those dull nights in.

1.0 out of 5 stars Artificial and unfunny - avoid at all costs, 2 April 2002
By A Customer
I am a huge fan of Cary Grant but this film must be one of his worst. The fact that the plot is totally contrived would not be a problem (most of Cary Grant's best films require a little suspension of disbelief) if it weren't for the paper-thin characterisation, the long-winded dialogue and the wooden acting.

Robert Mitchum is completely out of place, Cary Grant looks bored (that's not just underacting!) and Deborah Kerr and Jean Simmons have both been much better in other films.

Skip this and go straight to The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday or The Awful Truth, all of which deal with infidelity/divorce with far more wit and style.
