So, I'm stood at the front at the 4th Bishopstock festival down in sunny (not)Devon,last May with my brother Nick and my recently turned 13-year old son Richard, thinking, "this Magic Slim bloke must be some kind of cover artist for Magic Sam or Memphis Slim or perhaps he's some kind of relative ? As seasoned critics, it takes a fair bit to get us genuinely wound up so we were both as cynical as the next ignoramous until Richard looks at me and says " I fancy a hot dog " and I say "well wait a **"ckin' minute and we'll all go and get one". (At this point, I should have been arrested and charged by the World Ignorance Police.) So the crowd starts yelling and clapping and on to the stage walks this big lanky bass player with the drummer and the rythym guitarist. A few seconds later and they're playing what seems like a refreshingly brilliant execution of original Chicago blues backbeat and so doughbrain here starts thinkin' " wow,what a brilliant bass player this Magic Slim is (idiot). The next thing is that everyone else in the audience starts yelling and clapping as this giant of a Blues guitarist casually strolls on to the stage, with his blonde Fender Start hanging off his well-honed beer gut, while I start thinking to myself that I really should know better. With three bars played, I look at Nick and he looks at me and we both say ' How the **ck did we miss this bloke before ?' After 12 bars, I pick myself up out of the mud and stand, completely awestruck, for the next 50 minutes. Now you can do an awful lot in 50 minutes but this must have been one of the best 50 minutes in my life, no shit. Magic Slim is one of the last great Chicago Blues players and it was a privilege to be there. So, if you love the blues and you know how it SHOULD sound, check out his latest album SNAKEBITE. This is a brilliant introduction to Magic Slim, it's everything a good blues album should be. Here's to the next one. Also investigate 'Black Tornado' and 'Gravel Road'

I heard this guy playing to about 50 people in a dark smokey basment of a Paris hotel. I was stunned! The man is up there with blues guitar greats, Muddy waters, B B King and Clapton. So how come no-one knows him? Just check him out.
