Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Recoil is what Alan Wilder has been doing with himself since leaving Depeche Mode in 1996. Recoil are not a proper band, as such: the name is a flag of convenience under which Wilder arrays a floating roster of collaborators. The set-up is similar to Ivo Watts-Russell's This Mortal Coil and Hope Blister, and Recoil's actual music isn't so far removed from it, either: this is heavy-going stuff, big on gloomy and portentous atmosphere and rather light on chuckles and tunes you can whistle. Wilder is abetted this time out by performance poets Nicole Blackman and Samantha Coerbell, shrieking diva Diamanda Galas and one Rosa Torras, a Recoil fan from Barcelona who responded to Wilder's Internet appeal for recordings of people speaking in their native language. Between them, this unlikely collective have made a record that, while scarily cheerless, is not without a certain gloomy appeal. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - if a little disturbing, 22 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Forget about Depeche Mode (as Wilder seems to have done) because that band have never sounded like this, and nor will they. As atmospheric and image-provoking as Talk Talk's 'Laughing Stock' this is the kind of album you should listen to alone, and with the lights out. If you have already sampled Recoil you'll know what to expect and won't be disappointed. If you're a Recoil-virgin it will be an experience akin to baptism by fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars dark and gloomy yet very compelling, 23 Sep 2001
By A Customer
As a fan of depeche mode and some of the artists working with Alan W on this all I can say is I was not disappointed.Yes its dark yes its (arguably) gloomy but it is very very compelling...pure beauty on a CD!!!!! Variety and diversity makes this truly amazing if you are an appreciator of this kind of music.Well worth the listening even if only to hate it///

5.0 out of 5 stars total recoil, 25 Feb 2006
By radio atlantis "follow me not" (tha north of ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Liquid [VINYL] (Vinyl)
This was i believe alan wilder's second recoil album since parting ways with dm, a solo project where he can let all those darker instincts to the fore. the main difference between this and 'unsound methods' is that the vocalists have been reined in slightly (ms estep i'm looking at you, and probably worth saying i can't speak spanish).
musically alan has enlisted the talents of dean garcia and monti from curve, and their influences work wonders with garcia's bass to the fore on 'want', and the drum/ percussion sounds beautifully done throughout. alan has always been a dab hand at the ol' beats and bases stuff (NOT drum and bass), and this album sees him at his best. it's all about evoking atmospere, done consistently throughout, be it the tales of sin like 'breath control', 'liquid courage' or 'strange hours'. highlight to me though is the spanish growl on 'vertigen' and the tale of urban despair that is 'supreme', probably the closest alan has got to drum + bass.
one more thing. curious to see in the "artsits who have bought recoil have bought..." no mention of the likes of meat beat manifesto. if you like recoil check this guy out...
