Though his primary career was as an arranger of music for films and television, Hugo Montenegro is far better known for his adaptations of other people's film music--so much so that The Best of Hugo Montenegro contains not one of his own original compositions. That said, it's Montenegro's versions of songs like "Theme from 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'" and "Our Man Flint" that have become the standards, while his takes on James Bond ("Goldfinger", "The James Bond Theme" and "Thunderball") and Ennio Morricone classics are among the best-known and loved versions of said themes. Though he tended towards lavish string and horn sections, it was his distinctive versions of Morricone's spaghetti western themes that were by far Montenegro's most successful work; on these he borrowed from the sounds and arrangements that he found on his children's favourite pop records. --Bucky Wunderlick
