Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Just two tracks into Reinventing The Steel, and it seems that Pantera--the godfathers of speed metal--have brightened up: "Don't waste your life / Embrace it" roars vocalist Phil Anselmo on "Goddamn Electric", an unusual sentiment to hear amid the pile driver drums and Diamond Darrell's crunching guitar riffs. Does this mean that Pantera have lost their brutal edge? Of course not. Reinventing The Steel is as vicious as they've ever been, it's just that now they're a bit more thoughtful and--after more than a decade--mature. Though for the most part the songs are as aggressive as ever ("We'll Grind That Axe For A Long Time", "Death Rattle" and frenzied album opener "Hellbound"), and display more depth than ever before, especially on standout tracks like "You Don't Belong To It" and "Uplift". Not since their breakthrough Cowboys From Hell has thrash metal sounded so fresh, and not since Vulgar Display Of Power have Pantera sounded so good. --Robert Burrow

CD Description

Whether you like the genre of music Pantera plays or not, you have to give respect to these guys for staying true to form. The group is still churning out the same brand of aggressive metal that their fans have come to expect. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell takes the group into a previously-unexplored melodic realm with his effective use of sound processing on the opening riff of "Hellbound", and "Yesterday Don't Mean Sh**" is a heavy tune with a great guitar riff.
"You've Gotta Belong To It" is brutal, with swirling guitar sounds on the bridge and a do-your-own-thing message. The mid-tempo trudge of "Revolution Is My Name" in a fitting musical backdropto vocalist Phil Anselmo's rally against ignorance and prejudice. "Death Rattle" is a fast, thrashing number sure to inspire many a mosh pit. "We'll Grind That Axe For a Long Time" conveys the band's dedication to metal. Anselmo's screaming vocals, Dimebag's flashy solo and Vinnie Paul's double-bass drum action make "I'll Cast A Shadow" a thunderous album closer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the casual fan, 18 Sep 2005
By A Customer
I agree that this album is not the band's best. There are so many more fantastic metal albums to buy. It is heavy alright but it lacks either strong melodies or top quality rhythm. The vocal track is over the top and the rest doesn't gel. "Vulgar display" is hugely better. In all honesty I find this album difficult to listen to, making me feel a bit like my old mum - yet I have a collection stuffed with Sabbath, Megadeth, Mettallica, Slayer etc. You will be told to turn this down/off - but in such circumstances it is better to have a sense of incomprehending indignation (as if for example you are playing "Vulgar Display") rather than honest agreement. Not for the casual fan. 3 stars? well it is heavy...

3.0 out of 5 stars Something missing!, 21 Oct 2001
By A Customer
There does seem to be something not quite up to scratch on this album. Sure, there's still Dimebag's thundering riffs, Phil Anselmo's raging voice and Vinnie Paul's thumping drum rhythms, but this album comes nowhere close to the greatness of Vulgar Display and Far Beyond Driven.

On too many of the songs you can hear the re-emergence and re-hashing of riffs from earlier albums. The whole album exhibits a lack of fresh ideas from the Pantera boys who can do so much better. Revolution Is My Name and maybe one or two other songs show Pantera at their brilliant best.

If you want to get into Pantera's music buy Vulgar Display or Far Beyond Driven, two far superior albums. Perhaps I am being too critical because trying to live up to the quality of the aforementioned albums would have been very difficult.
