Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
"For 31 years I've been the 'unplugged' guy in a rock & roll band," says Ian Anderson modestly of his time with Jethro Tull. In truth, Anderson the songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer, really is Jethro Tull, so a solo album might seem like a redundant prospect. But expressing a desire to produce a slice of his acoustic style unadulterated by Tull's progressive (or latterly, MOR) rock sound, Anderson has made an understated album which is all the better for not having to please fans of stadium rock pomposity. He enlists the help of Andrew Giddings on sundry keyboards, Fairport Convention drummer Gerry Conway appears on a couple of tracks, as does veteran Tull guitarist Martin Barré, but otherwise it's Anderson all the way, mandolins, bouzouki and trademark flute to the fore. The wealthy middle-aged farmer may have mellowed somewhat from the wild-eyed, manic frontman of albums like Aqualung (no "Cross-Eyed Mary" here), but he's still a formidable musician with a distinctively quirky songwriting style. And if none of these songs stand out as individual classics, The Secret Language Of Birds is full of charming music, beautifully produced, making it feel pleasantly like a modest sequel to the folk-rock heyday of Tull's glorious Songs From The Wood andHeavy Horses.--Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars A mature, sparkly, gentle, marvelously acoustic gem., 10 Aug 2002
By Diego Garro "rinnegato" (Staffordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am one of those old Jethro Tull's fans who always enjoyed most the acoustic bits in all the band's features. For those like me, Secret Language Of Birds represents a long awaited breeze of fresh air. Anderson's writing and playing style proves here to have reached an all round technical and inspirational maturity.
This album is packed with excellent song-writing and tasty arrangements. Perhaps Anderson's voice is either fatigued or intentionally restrained but his flute and frets playing is majestic as usual, with a care, accuracy and preparation I heard in no other Tull's album.
Musicians and sound engineers has made this album technically outstanding. Anderson's parlour guitar, bouzouki and mandolins ring bright and clear across the stereo image immersing you in a sound world timeless and enchanting.
The lyrics are finally stripped from the unnecessary pomposity of too many Anderson's tunes he wrote for the Tulls: these are wonderful, subtle, intelligent poems mixing social awareness (Sanctuary, Set Aside), clever story-telling (Panama Freighter) and playful, joyful, irresistible irony (Postcard Day, a delightful classic).
This album makes you wonder and regret the time Anderson has wasted during the last 15 years trying to readapt his rock style to the changing times of popular music with frankly disappointing results. It also makes you wanting and waiting impatiently for what hopefully will be more of the kind.
One of the best albums in my huge collection. Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars still delivering the goods, 27 May 2000
despite being a fan it has to be said I approached this solo album with a little trepidation, after all at this stage of many careers it is a little hard to imagine the motivation. Delightfully the album is a largely successful mixture of fine melodies and some good playing. Occasional lyrics are a little dubious (see any of the last 3 Tull albums for the same) but the songs are mostly free of cringe. On a few tracks the addition of drums and some excellent orchestration lifts them to amongst the best efforts of the last few years by Ian Anderson, with or without the rest of the band. I look forward to the next solo effort more postively than before!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Musicians Album, 3 Feb 2003
By L. MILBURN "lancemilburn2" (Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After too many years of Ian Anderson trying to keep up with the metaphorical Jones's by producing some truely ghastly electronic albums, here we have a return to what I suspect is Ian's heartland, the acoustic sound of woodwind and guitars. All the songs on the album are gems. Some are fun (Postcard day), some are profound and thought provoking (Sanctury)all are well crafted and demonstrate that Ian Anderson is above all a musician. If you're a forty-something life long 'Tull fan (like me) you'll love it. Even if you've never heard of Jethro Tull or Ian Anderson you'll be hooked by the sheer professioanl musicianship of the piece.
