5.0 out of 5 stars a movie that blends romance and suspense, with lovely Julie, 26 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Blake Edwards manages to find an equilibrium among suspense, espionage and romance in a movie that is, at the same time, entertaining, intelligent and sophisticated. Filmed in Barbados, London and Paris, it catches your attention from the very begining: the fabulous titles by Maurice Binder. From then on, let yourself go and follow the adventures of the corageous character beautifully performed by Miss Julie Andrews. She is divinely dressed bu Christian Dior and the score, by John Barry, is sweepingly involving. Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense, gripping thriller, 12 Nov 2003
By A Customer
I first saw this when it was originally released, and it's still as brilliant. It's a tense, ingenious thriller with first class performances and some of the most heart-in-the-mouth moments of any film. For anyone who's too young to be familiar with the 'good old days' of Cold War, it will conjure the atmosphere of an era when merely hearing 'Lublianka' and 'KGB' were enough to send shivers of dread down the spine. Besides Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif, Sylvia Sims is excellent as the diplomatic wife who is acting a facade. As a bonus, the film shows the Colony Club hotel in Barbados before it was done up and spoilt. I envy anyone who's never seen this -you're in for a treat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cold War drama left me cold, 8 Feb 2005
By Kona (Emerald City) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
It is the height of the Cold War, and Judith (Julie Andrews), who works in the British Home Office, has gone to Barbados to get over a failed love affair. She just happens to be staying next door to suave Col. Sverdlov (Omar Sharif), a highly-placed Russian spy. He pursues her, relentlessly, and then follows her back to London. Does he want to defect to the West or recruit her for his side?

Despite the two beautiful stars and a top-notch supporting cast, the movie is slow, confusing, and dull. Andrews never convinces us that she is attracted to, let alone in love with, the Colonel. She looks stiff and uncomfortable throughout, wearing a wardrobe that was meant to be glamorous, but is silly and overdone. The script makes Sharif out to be an annoying, tiresome, overgrown teenager with one thing on his mind, and there is no chemistry between the two stars. The lovely John Barry soundtrack is haunting and the scenery is lush, but the movie's over-all feeling is one of cool detachment and ennui. Unfortunately, there is neither romance nor spy thrills to be had in The Tamarind Seed.
