Amazon.co.uk Review

Jean-Claude Van Damme, aka "the Muscles from Brussels", has sought to revitalise his flagging career by working with the most adrenalised directors from Hong Kong action films. His first such effort was this, the umpteenth remake of The Most Dangerous Game, which teamed him with Hong Kong's most fluid action poet, John Woo (director of M:I2). Woo does what he can but, as much magic as he injects into the action, he can't turn Van Damme into an actor. Still, this is above-average fare for the wooden Belgian, in which he plays a guy trying to bust a ring of hunters who pay for the right to track and kill human quarry. And Woo has the ever-reliable Lance Henriksen as the chief bad guy, always a plus. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars watchable, 19 Dec 2007
I guess..only a vandamme fan would be bothered to write a comment on this movie. The reality of this movie..is that it is not even near great. It really could have been a great movie. There is a lot of action..but the action is not John Woo's best. The plot is simple. Woman looking for her homeless father. Vandamme helps her. Mafia type group charges rich people to hunt the homeless for fun. Pretty depressing story. The film is basically action throughout and gives very little time to get people into the story. Its just in your face..but just not made well enough. I must admit..this movie has grown on me through the years. If it comes on the tv..i may watch .if i aint got nothing else better to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews!, 13 Dec 2007
Notable mainly for being John Woo's first Western film after his massive success and excellent films in China. All his trademarks are here- slow motion action, stylish violence, tough but quiet male characters, and a ruthless bad guy. It is not up the standards of his early work, or as good as Broken Arrow, but with a strong cast it remains a solid action movie and very entertaining for people who like this sort of thing. Like me.

Van Damme stars as Chance, a tough drifter looking for some work. He sees a young woman being mugged by a gang of crooks and wades in, destroys them without breaking a sweat, and leaves. The young woman, Natasha, played by Yancy Butler is in town trying to find her father who has disappeared. She decides to hire Chance as a protector and help her find her father. They find out that he was homeless and in an attempt to gain some quick cash entered himself in a deadly game run by local sadist Emil Fouchan- Lance Henricksen. He has a team of criminals who are taking advantage of the lax policing in the area, and they hunt helpless humans for sport. He gives his victim the chance to get to a certain point in the city while he chases them with a gun. This is what happened to Natasha's father, and when Chance becomes involved we know there is going to be fireworks.

Henriksen here hams everything as the bad guy but is still very good and enjoyable to watch. Van Damme tries to be more cool than any of his previous roles and Woo certainly gets good results from him. Butler is excellent as Natasha and steals most scenes, and the rest of the cast is adequate. The action is not as stylish as other Woo films, and we get the sense he is easing his way onto the Western audience. There are some wonderfully over-the-top scenes though, and everything works well. The simple story is also effective, leaving room for the main draw- guns, kicks, explosions, and killings. One of Van Damme's best.

The DVD, apart from a trailer and cast notes has no extras, but it is cheap and should be part of every Van Damme fan's collection. If you're an action or martial arts fan, and you haven't seen it, snap it up- for 4 quid you'd be a fool to be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars best film EVER, 28 Feb 2006
By Mr. P. J. Thorn "Thorn" (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Whether or not you will like this film depends on a couple of factors; are you a die hard action film fan, or do you have a sense of irony bigger than van dammes biceps? If not, this film may not be for you but as i can tick both of the above boxes, i absolutely love it. First, Van Damme himself, in all his mulletted glory, with the oh so unnecessary flexing and the tendency to make even the most mundane words amusing (for 'boyfriend' try 'boy..FReeend'). Slo-mo action is an ever-present here, at its pinnacle during the finale scene with a multitude of explosions and the completely justifiable and practical multiple forward flips to escape said explosions. None of this Tom Cruise in Collateral 'twice in the chest, once in the head' nonsence. If you dont shoot someone 17 times THEY ARE NOT DEAD! Lars Henricksen is fantastic as the evil entrepeneur, responsible for the 'hunts' of ex-combat veterans by his millionaire clients- I don't care what anyone says, that is a BRILLIANT idea. And there's so much violence! But it's okay, because they're evil, and literally faceless (many of his would-be assasins are to be found wearing crash helmets with blackened visers even when inside a darkened warehouse). Perhaps the best bit of the movie is Van Dammes uncle, riding away on horseback clutching his bow and arrow. so surreal it hurts... I do note the hypocrisy of people criticising this film when if it was a Hong Kong film it would be worshipped.
Seriously though, watch this film, for it is your purpose in life.
