4.0 out of 5 stars A Film Worth Watching, 10 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel this film embodies all of the most important elements of the book, namely the relationships between Jean Valjean and Javert, and Marius and Cosette. Of these relationships Valjean and Javert's stand out as far more interesting than the insipid love story of Marius and Cosette, thanks to the superb acting from Richard Jordan and Anthony Perkins. Jordan plays a convincing Valjean eliciting compassion and sympathy and Perkins a sinister and driven Javert.

The film's only real failure is that it does not manage to show the complex depths and entanglements of relationships between the characters as present in the novel. Although there are good turns from the bishop and the gardener, the only characters with any real depth are Valjean and Javert. This is due in part to the length of the film which is not enough to cover all the events detailed in Hugo's epic, yet as a piece of entertainment this film is thoroughly watchable and enjoyable. The best adaptation I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best adaptation of the novel, 11 Sep 2003
By ZRRIFLE (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Les Miserables [DVD] [1978] (DVD)
By far the best screen version of the book, and for a originally made TV movie (Hallmark Presentation), it blows away the theatre version which came out 20 years later starring Liam Neeson. Very moving, and the soundtrack does a great job of adding to the story. If you've read the book, do yourself a favor and watch this...better yet, buy it. If you've never read the book, after watching this adaptation you'll probably want to.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is quite funny..., 2 Dec 2000

but not intentionally so. Anthony Perkins has a somewhat ambiguous air to him; one can't quite tell whether he has an extremely realistic french accent, or a really crap (can I say that here?) British accent. Richard Jordan as Valjean in his later years bears a striking resemblance to Karl Marx. Give the poor guy a razor and he would no longer be the father of modern Communism. There is direct reference to Hugo's original text which I find most pleasing in an adaptation. Fantine is suitably wretched. The music can become quite intrusive after a while; but it is still Les Misérables, which is a lot to say compared to that black and white one.
