There are many who regard Penderecki as unapproachable or confine themselves to the most often reviewed pieces such as the St Luke Passion but in fact there is much more to Penderecki than this. His symphonies admittedly do vary in quality and can be an acquired taste but I would recommend this disc to anyone with an adventurous spirit - especially the one movement work Symphony No.5. It's dark overtones conjure up images (at least to me) of Shostakovich in his most sombre yet inspired moments asnd the whole piece is extremely satisfying. The playing of the National Polish Orchestra gives it that extra authenticity and national feel whilst Antoni Wit once again demonstrates his command of an orchestra and a score.
A highly recommended bargain acquisition.
