Amazon.co.uk Review
Although it will go down in history as a
Madonna film soundtrack, featuring two exclusive tracks from Maddie herself, there is much more to
The Next Best Thing than just
William Orbit's best mate. In fact, there is a marvellous mixture of up-tempo poppy numbers, like
Christina Aguilera's "Don't Make Me Love You" and the excellent
Groove Armada's "If Everybody Looked The Same", chilled laid-back tracks like
Mandalay's fragile wavering "This Life" and
Beth Orton's "Stars All Seem To Weep" and some exotic world beats from Metisse ("Boom Boom Ba") and Manu Chao ("Bong Bong"). The ubiquitous Moby even puts in an appearance with another track culled from his
Play album--the essential ingredient for any compilation wanting to take itself seriously in 2000. The weakest tracks on the album are the two cover versions: Olive's "I'm Not In Love"--which fails in its attempt to cross 10CC's classic with Olive's one-hit-wonder "You're Not Alone"--and Madonna's "American Pie"--which suffers from comparison with 1999's Madonna/Orbit moment of soundtrack genius "Beautiful Stranger". However, Madonna fans will not be disappointed as there is a genuine gem in the shape of "Time Stood Still"--all sweeping strings, acoustic guitars and a luscious vocal from La Ciccone. Just don't judge the whole album on the strength of "American Pie". --
