Even Brian De Palma's staunchest defenders had to swallow hard with this gaudily gory bauble of a thriller that is built around a gruesome (yet surprisingly wittily staged) stalking and murder involving a female victim and a killer with a giant power drill. This is De Palma at his most sensational, in a story about a B-movie actor (Craig Wasson) with career problems and a habit as a voyeur. He witnesses the aforementioned murder, then teams up with a porn actress (Melanie Griffith) to try and find the killer. De Palma has a blast going inside the porn film industry, and even films a pseudo rock video with one-hit wonders Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Having seen this movie twice -the first time I couldn't believe the audacity of De Palma- the second viewing confirmed his flashy trashy technique and story telling abilities, I can only say he bettered himself with Carrie and Blow Out. The acting is suitably over the top when required,the dialogue cheesy at times, and the special effects/bloodbath all adding up to his better works. A must see for anyone with a strong "stomach" and sense of daring- You will be rewarded.

this seems inspired by the giallo movies of the 70's , but de palma is more sophisticated and blends hitchock rip-offs with dario argento visuals, and makes it a style of his own. the performances here are right on the spot: craig wasson is simply great as the flawed hero, melanie griffith is at her best as the pornstar.
this is a strange movie, and not for all tastes, but it's rewarding. the suspenseful chase in the shopping mall is a high point. and one thing that most reviewers forgot: it's a somewhat cynical view on hollywood: some actors do b-movies and others do porn. and de palma does a mainstream movie saying: these characters aren't worse or better than mainstream actors. that's the real idea behind... body double. get it?
it's funny how most people focus on the violence towards women or performances or plot holes. great movies are about vision, they are poetry on the screen. and, like it or not, de palma is a poet.

This is quite a strange little film. Jake (Wasson) is a claustrophobic, B-Movie actor who has just been fired from his latest film when a friend invites him to look after an apartment for a few days. While there, Jake becomes a voyeur of a scantily - clad woman who performs some erotic dance routine nightly, on the dot. Jake unwittingly becomes a stalker, not just of the mystery woman, but of her other stalker! Inevitably, Jake witnesses her murder.

I say this is strange because I find DePalma confusing. He is such a skilled director, but at times it seems as if he is oblivious to his own cheesiness. The majority of this movie is fantastically directed, the scences on set of the low budget vampire flick, the battle at the end (and the excellent cross-over to the said vampire film) and the surreal music video within a film featuring Frankie Goes to Hollywood on a porn set, this is quite an experience. Then there's the strange scenes like where Jake is kissing Gloria (the woman he's been stalking) and the camera pans around them in circles, in slo-mo, while soppy music plays, for what seems like an eternity. It really is embarrassing to watch. It's these occasional dips in quality, and some of the over-long scenes (especially with Melanie Griffith) that warrants this film only 3 stars.

It's worth mentioning that Craig Wasson is incredible in this film. He fits the role perfectly, an amazing, shamefully underused actor. Very convincing. It's definitely worth getting hold of this movie, just be wary of the cringe-worthy moments.
