It's justice Joseph Kirkland's first day on the U.S supreme court and his first case involves a young woman who has had an abortion and has been convicted for the murder of her unborn child. Kirkland with his talent for careful consideration for both sides of a case, keeps an ambiguous silence as the woman's appeal is avidly debated by the other judges, when his colleagues vote the result it is a tie - leaving Kirkland with the deciding vote. Tensions mount as his research brings him into contact with both the ppro-life and pro-chioce organisations and lead him to a confrontation with the politically savvy justice Dunn.
