Amazon.co.uk Review
John Travolta is Vic Deakins, a bomber pilot who launches a devilish plan to hijack two nuclear missiles for big-time extortion. Vic never sweats, spews out great one-liners, knocks off money men with glee, toys with killing half a million people ... he even smokes!

If you giggled at his "Ain't it cool" line from the trailer, you're in the right frame of mind for this comedic action film. Never as gritty or semi-realistic--or for that matter as heart-thumping--as the original DieHard, Broken Arrow still delivers. If Travolta is cast against type, everyone else is by the numbers; Christian Slater as Hale, the earnest copilot looking to foil the plot, Samantha Mathis as the brave park ranger caught in the middle, Frank Whaley as an eager diplomat and Delroy Lindo as a right-minded colonel. As with his previous script (the superior Speed), writer Graham Yost moves everything quickly along as Hale and the ranger try to cut off Deakins's plan over a variety of terrains. There are plane crashes, car chases, a pursuit through an abandoned mine, a helicopter-train shootout and lots of fighting between boys. Each time Hale finds himself perfectly in place to foil Deakins, you're suppose to laugh at the unbelievable situations. That's where Broken Arrow is deceptive: its tone is right for the laughter compared to the mean-spirited Schwarzenegger and Stallone action films with laboured jokes. Hong Kong master director John Woo (TheKiller and Hard Target) pulls out all the stops--slow motion of Hale and Deakins' gymnastic gun play, nifty stunts, countdowns to doomsday. Woo may know action but he needs more guidance in creating unique and stunning special effects. This is action entertainment at its cheesiest. Travolta and Woolater reteamed for Face/Off. --Doug Thomas

2.0 out of 5 stars Painfully predictable, 27 April 2002
The films director John Woo is an undisputed master at action films, he combines mind blowing stunts in indulging scripts.
However this film was a dissapointing let down from form. The script is the same old yarn; a fighter plane is stolen, only the heroic fighter pilot can save the day. In this kind of action film, there needs to be something that sets it apart, however Broken Arrow is as unindividual as they come.

The one liners are cliches, as are the characters, and the formula. John Travolta puts in the low-effort unconvincing performance that we have become accostumed to in the last decade, and Slater is alright, but the script condemns him to being stereotypical and forgettable.

The special efects are admittedly impressive, but I belive special effects should complement a film, not form the base attraction for it.
This film is very reminiscent of Con Air; the films plot gets more and more ludicrous as the plot goes on, with cheesy music and action all the way through.

The characters are wholy unoriginal; the playful bad guy, the inexperienced heroine, the bold hero,- do they sound familiar?
For the same sort of films, look at the Bond collection, with similar action and formula , but at least they don't take themselves seriously, or for the more intelligent action, look for Ronin, Usual Suspects, or Woo's previous films like 'The Killer'.

5.0 out of 5 stars unexpectedly good, 1 April 2002
By A Customer
One of the best things about this film was seeing a strong female role played by Samantha Mathias. For once Hollywood used a woman who did not have to rely upon a man to save her. This was not a "love interest" part, it could easily have been played by male or female. The direction was good, as with all John Woo's work, and not cluttered up with too many special effects. The action rattled along. John Travolta made an excellent villain and delivered some pretty cool lines - all credit to the script here for avoiding too much cheesey dialogue. Delroy Lindo as ever, was good, as was Christian Slater - good guys are never as much fun to watch as the villains! I would compare this with the under-rated "Chill Factor" rather than "Speed." If you want a film that delivers well paced action, some great one-liners and plenty of thrills, Broken Arrow is one to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Speed Of An Arrow, 15 Nov 2002
Most people seem to hate this. I don't. The reason? It's an action-packed, thrilling rollercoaster of a ride from start to finish! That's why!
John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Phenomenon) plays Vic Deakins, a renegade pilot who plots to steal two nuclear bombs and hold the world to ransom. Standing in his way is his co-pilot Riley Hale played by Christian Slater (Interview With The Vampire)
This film has everything: an edge-of-your-seat Humm-Vee chase through the Grand Canyon, nuclear weapons, evil baddies, surprises at every turn, exploding A-Bombs and lots, lots more!
Also features a special appearance from Vondie-Curtis Hall (Miller from Die-Hard 2).
I think this film really overshadows the likes of that abysmal Spider-Man.
