Amazon.co.uk Review
Ever felt the chill wind of déjà vu? You will with Stag, as its entire premise follows that of director Peter Berg's none-more-black comedy Very Bad Things to the letter--except that Stag actually came first. While Very Bad Things starred Cameron Diaz and Christian Slater and therefore got a cinema release, Stag stars (oh dear) Mario Van Peebles, ex-Brat Pack star Andrew McCarthy and Taylor Dayne, and therefore didn't grace the silver screen.

Van Peebles plays Michael, the loyal best friend and housemate of Victor (John Stockwell) who is poised to leave the buddy fold for marriage and domesticity. So, being a pal, Michael organises a surprise stag party for Victor, and invites along a host of their old crowd--including, regrettably, drug dealer and racketeer Pete (McCarthy), and the obligatory pair of strippers, Serena and Kelly (Dayne and Jenny McShane). Of course, things swiftly turn rowdy, Kelly falls to her wholly accidental death, and the boys have to cover up the death fast. Having established this nightmarish scenario, Stag veers away from the Gap-ad Grand Guignol of Very Bad Things and instead attempts to juggle suspense, melodrama, and a fairly ponderous examination of modern-male morality. The results aren't particularly edifying, but they do display a certain conviction, even if it's never satisfactorily explained why Van Peebles spends the entire film without eyebrows. Them's the breaks. --Danny Leigh

4.0 out of 5 stars suprisingly good, 6 Dec 2003
THIS FILM PROVES THAT JUST BECAUSE IT HAS LESSER KNOWN ACTORS, A QUIET RELEASE & A PLOTLINE THAT AT THE TIME WAS THOUGHT TO BE A COPY (BUT TURNED OUT TO BE THE ORIGINAL) IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT HAS TO BE MEDIOCRE. I PICKED THIS UP FOR LESS THEN A FIVER AND CONSIDER IT TO BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST BARGAINS IN MY DVD COLLECTION. IN FACT EVERYTIME I SEE IT ON MY SHELF I HAVE TO SMUGLY SMILE TO MYSELF.
THE PLOT IS BASICALLY A STAG PARTY THAT GOES HORRIBLY WRONG QUITE INNOCENTLEY(ISH). A CALL GIRL/STRIPPER & HER MINDER GET KILLED, A SERIES OF HOW TO GET OUT OF THIS MESS WITHOUT GOING TO PRISON EFFORTS LEADS TO ANOTHER TRAGEDY ALL OF WHICH HAVE THE AIR OF BELIEVABILITY ABOUT THEM. DISAGREEMENT AFTER DISAGREEMENT AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT THEY HAVE GOT THEMSELVES DEEPER IN THE S**T.
THE PHRASE 'THIS ISN'T HAPPENING' MAY SEEM A BIT CLICHE BUT REALLY DOES SET THE SCENE AND DRAGS THE VIEWER AS WELL INTO THAT 'I AM REALLY IN TROUBLE FEELING' & WE ARE JUST TUCKED UP SAFE AT HOME WATCHING A FILM. THE ENDING IS VERY SATISFYING & THERE IS A SCENE WHERE ONE OF THE CHARACTERS STARTS TO DRONE ON ABOUT HIS BAD EXPERIENCES IN THE GULF WAR, JUST WHEN YOU THINK THIS COULD BE THE BORING PART ANOTHER CHARACTER CUTS HIM OFF BY SAYING 'I DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO THIS FLASHBACK S**T.' WHICH BASICALLY MAKES THE VIEWER FEEL THAT YOU COULD QUITE EASILY BE RELATED OR KNOW THESE PEOPLE, AS THEY ARE THINKING AND DOING EXACTLY WHAT YOU WOULD DO. (DEPENDING WHO YOU ARE OF COURSE).
REMEMBER ANDREW McCARTHY? WELL HE POPS UP AND PLAYS A PART MILES AWAY FROM HIS 1980'S TYPE CASTING.
KEVIN DILLON, PLAYS A MATURER PART OF HIS PLATOON CHARACTER (BUNNY) AND EVEN MARIO VAN PEEBLES GETS TO BE BACK IN THE FILM LIMELITE.
OVERALL A GOOD FILM ALL SET IN ONE HOUSE WITH THE FEELING OF BEING AN EQUAL PARTNER TO THE ORIGINAL AND EVEN THE REMAKE OF '12 ANGRY MEN'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film!, 25 Sep 2000
This review is from: Stag [VHS] (VHS Tape)
STAG did grace the silver screen in limited release! We loved the film. It came out a full year before its imitators. Great perfomances from Taylor Dayne, John Henson, Lawrence Leritz, Ben Gazarra, Kevin Dillon and Jerry Stiller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, could have been better though!, 5 Jul 2006

I watched this last night and thought it was pretty good. It couldnt have cost much to make, as it was all filmed within a bachelors house and only had about 10/15 actors in it. Not meaning to say it makes it a bad film though.
It was definately viewable, bit boring at some bits and i'd have to mention that i prefered 'very bad things' with Christian Slater. Pretty much the same storyline, but more action.
