Amazon.co.uk Review
One Night in Heaven, or--to be precise--one night in the studio on "Later with Jools Holland". Quite frankly, ever since this board-sweeping performance by Manchester's gift to Britfunk there's been little to compete with it in terms of sheer "must-see-againness", and now here it is, the kind of stuff the crisp'n'clean DVD format was surely invented for. All the hits are here, including the title track, "Angel Street" and "Movin' On Up", while the stonking percussion break in "Sight for Sore Eyes" is reason enough in itself to buy this item. The overall standards here are high enough to allow us to forgive the inclusion of the ghastly-but-inevitable "Search for the Hero", buried as it is in the no-person's land between the middle of the concert and the finale. There's also a choir and a suitably zippy string section (dimly referred to as a "mini-orchestra" on the cover blurb), and Holland gets to join in a couple of times, perfectly at ease as ever. --Roger Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band, great performance!, 20 Jan 2002

A superb collection of 14 M People favourites, recorded live at the BBC in 1998 for 'Later with Jools Holland', this concert is a must have for any fan of the band or just live music in general.

For those familiar the 'Later' series it will go without saying that the whole thing is brilliantly produced and engineered (presented here in Dolby Digital, the sound quality is fantastic) but it is the musicianship that really sets this recording apart. I own several M-People albums and most of the tracks on this DVD far superior to the studio versions, thanks to the live energy and talent of the band and supporting cast.

Paul Birchall and Jools Holland deliver some sparkling piano breaks, Shovell gives it everything he's got from behind his bongoes (he seems to have been allocated his own corner of the studio, a veritable percussion-playground) and Snake Davis, surely the fifth M-person, shines on saxophone and also directs the string section. Heather Small's lead vocals are as rich and powerful as ever and accompanied not just by the usual backing crew but a full-blown gospel choir.

To pick one outstanding track almost seems unfair, but for me the specially extended, gospel-charged version of 'Just For You' has to be a favourite.

This is one DVD I don't think I'll ever tire of.
