Synopsis
In UTOPIA, the last film Laurel and Hardy made together, Stan and Ollie fly to London for the reading of Stan's late uncle's will. After Stan's uncle's cash is used to pay the solicitors, death duties, and tax, the only things left are a yacht--and a South Sea island. At the docks, the duo get their new boat, along with a displaced sailor and a stowaway. Together, the four set sail but are soon shipwrecked on an atoll during a storm. There they meet a French singer who is escaping her fiancee. When her annoying husband-to-be turns up unexpectedly, he discovers the area to be rich in uranium and soon everyone the land. Hilarious hijinks ensue...

2.0 out of 5 stars The lads go out on a whimper and not a bang!, 20 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Oh dear! This was the boys last film and although not their worst, they deserved better. Stan had been ill and was looking old and tired. Ollie had really piled on the weight by now and must have been 25 stone. L & H were in their late fifties when they made this and it shows too.It is sad to know that Ollie would die within 10 years from this film and Stan became inconsolable until his death in the mid 1960s. To be fair, there are still some good laughs to be had in this film, especially the scenes with Stan's pet lobster( don't ask!) and a particularly cruel but nonetheless quite funny jibe by Stan about Ollie using a life raft. The supporting actors are wooden as usual (I presume Ben Turpin was dead by then otherwise i am sure he would have been in it) and the direction is adequate but not inspired. I also think they may have run out of money as some scenes have good sets (the ones on the island) but others seem a bit spartan and the stock footage is a bit obvious. Stan and Ollie give it their best but they are 20 years past their prime by now and they were much better in the short films for Hal Roach than in a feature length like this. Also, by 1950s standards, this feature seems a bit primitive & basic. Our heroes are always worth a look but we should remember that they wre so much better than this decidedly average effort that only shows glimpses of how hilarious they could be. A word of caution, the Stonevision DVD has 2 interesting shorts as extras but the picture quality of the main feature is not particularly good and there are occasional jumps where a few frames have been removed due to damage to the print used.

1.0 out of 5 stars Even the Great make mistakes, 19 Jul 2002
By R. Hamilton "Lenny Banter" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It is always a a shame that the great always seem to go on one moment too long. This movie is a case in point. The European production stiffles the film and both the stars look old and unwell. Laurel was suffering from a life threatning illness which he thankfully recovered from. The plot is too complex, the gags are uninspired and any purchaser should really be directed to their 20's and 30's glory instead of this. Please avoid so as not to be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's different; try one of the other L & H films first., 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This European film, produced in 1950, was the last Laurel & Hardy movie, and most of the international cast and crew spoke other languages. (In the film Stan and Ollie speak English but everyone else is dubbed.) Both comedians had serious health problems during filming, and these are obvious in the film. The language barrier also caused communication problems on the set. Thanks to Laurel & Hardy, what should have been a total disaster is not all that bad. There's a novel setting and plenty of L & H humor, as they inherit a "yacht" and a tropical island. Laurel & Hardy fans may enjoy this as a novelty; first-time viewers should try an older, more typical L & H movie from the '20s or '30s before seeing this. European viewers may recall seeing this as ROBINSON CRUSOELAND or ATOLL K.

I have read all of the comments regarding this Film regarding the Poor Quality, the dubbing Stan looking sadly very ill and drawn in the face and Olly slightly over weight. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID! technically sub standard version by: Stonevision
It's not so much the content of this film but the quality of the conversion to DVD, to me is unwatchable and ironically far inferior to VHS. Read more
