Amazon.co.uk Review

Directed by Ralph Thomas, Above Us the Waves (1955) tells of a Royal Navy mission to sink the "invincible" German battleship Tirpitz, off the Norwegian coast. John Mills is calm and confident as the mission commander, with strong support from John Gregson and Donald Sinden--all treated by the German personnel as fellow gentlemen when captured. Despite stirring music from Arthur Benjamin, the action sequences are visually no more than adequate, and the film is only a partial success.--Richard Whitehouse

Set during the Second World War, Above Us The Waves [1955] tells the dramatic tale of British attempts to sink a German warship, the "Tirpitz", using midget submarines. This 1950s film stars John Mills, John Gregson and Donald Sinden.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for war film fanatics!, 27 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is a really good show. Depicting the struggle of the courageous band of volunteers who manned the midget submarines on the mission to destroy the Tirpitz, the shooting and superb casting make for a tense atmosphere - where the audience begins to feel the pressure of being trapped under the ocean in cramped conditions with a vitally important mission to perform. A tribute to British spirit and ingenuity!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really British, 26 Oct 2007

Above Us The Waves starrs John Mills who is always super as a great Britsh hero and this is how this film wins! Showing the skills of a small group of volunteers who manned the midget submarines on a"one way" mission to destroy the Tirpitz.

What makes the film great is that it is true!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful film, 27 Feb 2009
By Humpty Dumpty (Wall St, Upton Snodsbury) - See all my reviews
This is an astonishingly poor film. Full of dull talk and unthinking stiff upper lip attitudes, no attempt to explore character or to examine in any depth what's involved in mounting a dangerous wartime operation.

It's content to stick to cliches and banal stereotypes about Brits versus Jerries and about the glory of making war.

British war films made around the same time that do make an effort to avoid the obvious traps are The Cruel Sea, We Dive at Dawn and 49th Parallel, and I would recommend these instead. Or better still, go for Das Boot, an immeasurably better extended film/series.
