Amazon.co.uk Review

Outside of devoted cult audiences, many Americans have yet to discover the extremely stylish, relentlessly terrifying Italian horror genre, or the films of its talented virtuoso, Dario Argento. Suspiria, part one of a still-uncompleted trilogy (the luminously empty Inferno was the second), is considered his masterpiece by Argento devotees but also doubles as a perfect starting point for those unfamiliar with the director or his genre. The convoluted plot follows an American dancer (Jessica Harper) from her arrival at a European ballet school to her discovery that it's actually a witches coven; but, really, don't worry about that too much. Argento makes narrative subservient to technique, preferring instead to assault the senses and nervous system with mood, atmosphere, illusory gore, garish set production, a menacing camera, and perhaps the creepiest score ever created for a movie. It's essentially a series of effectively unsettling set pieces--a raging storm that Harper should have taken for an omen, and a blind man attacked by his own dog are just two examples--strung together on a skeleton structure. But once you've seen it, you'll never forget it. --Dave McCoy

5.0 out of 5 stars SUSPIRIA, 3 Nov 2000
THE ULTIMATE in Phantasmagoria. This film is, if not the best, the ultimate slasher film ever produced. Dario Argento has created a masterpiece which not only has held up to time but still sets precedents to this day. That comes from a good script and producing folks! Set in Germany, a young school girl soon finds herself in a very surreal situation which involves a dance school run by witches. Drawn in to strange events, she too, becomes a target of their wrath. Very stylishly filmed and executed, some call this Dario Argento's finest work. Script wise I would disagree as Deep Red is his masterpiece, but filmwise, this film ranks among his best. Very creepy in spots and the pounding soundtrack by GOBLIN is fantastic on the DVD format. I saw this when it first came out and never ever forgot it. This version only reminds me as to how profound this film really is. The effects are superb, the acting high brow, and the grisly murder scenes arty to some degree, but at best, quite bizarre. When was the last time you saw someone get murdered by barbed wire? Only Dario Argento could pull that off and he does so, in spades. A cult classic and a modern day thriller, this film cannot be missed by ANYONE into the horror genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks great - shame about the plot & acting, 18 Jan 2003
By Lendrick (London) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Suspiria [VHS] [1976] (VHS Tape)
This is a film which I'm sure works much better in a cinema than it does in your living room.

If stars were awarded just for the look of a film then this would be 5*, however, the lack of much of a plot combined with some hammy acting (not helped by the dubbed english soundtrack) stop this from being a 5 star film.

What makes it worthwhile is the set design and lighting - the film a visual feast - and the brilliantly weird soundtrack. Though there are times when I felt the over the top soundtrack was being used to make up for lack of action on screen.

The opening 10 minutes are as good as anything I have ever seen and the film is worth watching just for these. However, it leaves you with an expectation for the rest of the film which is ultimately let down. As others have said the middle part drags, and even the pyrotechnic end seemed a bit perfunctory to me.

Definitely worth watching, but you may find your finger straying towards the fast forward button at points.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspiria - Shocking and Stylish, 2 Mar 2005
By B. Evans "a_evans_1190" (South Wales, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Very rarely can I find a film that I found frightening, but this was one of them. It's a shame that this is a little known movie, as it could have been a horror classic, had it been released in English back in 1976 when released. Some of the killings are very gory, such as the girl who is stabbed and hung at the beginning and the blind man who was attacked by his dog. Other parts are just not for the squemish, like the invasion of maggots from the attic.

But underneath the gore lies a certain intelligence. Dario Argento clearly had to have been a very imaginative man to have made such an original film. The psychedelic surroundings of the ballet school add to the weirdness of the film.

As usual another good release from Anchor Bay. The second disc is packed with special features including a documentary about the film's of Dario Argento which features some well-known personalities in the world of horror.

The only small complaint I could have is that the English dialogue has been noticeably transferred in parts of the film, but this must be expected considering it was originally in Italian, and don't let this bother you!
