The tagline states, "Only love can bring you to your senses." Well, your senses have to be pretty dulled to love At First Sight. On paper the story--based on the writings of medical writer extraordinaire Oliver Sacks (Awakenings)--is intriguing: a blind man regains sight after surgery yet can never connect with what he sees, including a lovely new girlfriend. Indeed, maybe blind was better. From such interesting stuff (and a talented cast) comes a tepid love story and an unconvincing drama.

Val Kilmer plays Virgil, a serene resort worker who plays hockey in the dark and is the best masseur this side of the Catskills. Onto his table comes Amy, a bone-weary NYC architect (Mira Sorvino) who cries the first time Virgil does his magic. Instead of a voyage into the world of blindness, Amy's first instinct is to take Virgil to an eye doctor who can restore sight (Bruce Davison). Virgil receives sight, crumbling the trust between him and Amy. The clichés start building up and by the time Amy is wooed by her ex-husband (Steven Weber), her boss no less, one's patience wears thin.

The medical curiosities of the story--Virgil can see an item but can't grasp what it is until he touches it--do not translate well on screen. The film's liveliest character is Nathan Lane as a teacher of the blind. A scene with Virgil that gets to the heart of his ailment is so filled with spontaneity, one wonders if it was scripted or simply Lane's own extemporaneous dialogue. After an admirable start as a director (Guilty by Suspicion), Oscar-winning producer Irwin Winkler has not been able to put cinematic highs or believable angst into his films (The Net, Night in the City). At First Sight may look good but it is blind where it counts. --Doug Thomas

As always, Val Kilmer is brilliant as the blind man, virgil. He meets Amy (Mira Sorvino ) at the health center where he works as a masseur, and they fall in love. The story is about how to cope, when one part is blind and the other wants to do everything in her power to help restore his sight. There are many ups and downs and none of them stops to think of the consequences, regaining sight will cause. Not to mention the fact that there are no guaranties, that he will keep seeing. And of course there is the problems of other people, their reaction to the relationship and the fact that Virgil is blind. It takes a lot of time and pain to get where they both want to be: together. But best of all, it is based on a true story and that makes it absolutely wonderful. A movie to watch.

At first sight was an excellant if shorter movie than I would have liked to see. I was not aware when i watched it first that it was based on a true chapter of events.
The poor reveiw by amazon does not do the film justice. The comments about new sightedness by the amazon reviewer reveal an ignorance which should have been addressed before the review was written.
As with all films written about true life events there are elements of beauty and sensitivity within the film that would be hard to repeat in real life let alone on celluloid.
In places the links could be better done and one feels that it was in places constructed on a cartoon story board system.The events that would be included decided before the storyline was written. Rather than construct a storyline from the real events that worked and then build the story board from that. It makes me want to read the book to see what they left out. AS AN AVID LISTENER TO THE BBC 'DOES HE TAKE SUGAR?'The failure to understand the needs of any disabled person and assume that your solutions are best was clearly identified. It was dealt with savagly and brutally and the consequences of the failure to understand that the helpers were the problem was highlighted.I thought the highlighted insensitivity of the medical profession and there willingness to use him as a guinea pig both before and after the operation was well detailed. The fact that it was originally written from a doctors perspective did not detract from the relavance of the film. The love interest was moving and the tension on discovery of their initial and continuing feelings was real and true to life. I think it is a good film to watch and the discovery that it was based on real people has left me wanting to know more.Id prefer more of this type and quality of movie. I think that professional reveiwers forget that those of us who pay to see movies have not the opportunity for our pallettes to become jaded. We just do not see enough for that to happen.
